I have been playing my old DOS games of late, such as; King's Quest 1-8, Police Quest, Space Quest, and Quest for Glory. Any of you members (ages 22 and older) remember these games? The old Sierra adventure games?

I have been collecting these old games since last year, and was wondering if anyone had any of these that they were wanting to get rid of? If so, let me know!

Good times...

LOL...I probably have more than a few lying around, as I don't tend to throw things away unless I am forced to.  My favorites were the old Masters of Orion and one that was out in the mid-late 80's called space quest or something like that..I can't remember.  Ahh, the good ol' days. http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

you made me go and look it up. http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif  it was this game here:Starflight (http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/p,16/gameId,115) that got me hooked on pc gaming...then there was the original wing commander that just blew my mind. sad part is, I was playing this game before most of the people that pwn me at CS were born http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

No joke, I believe this game I have called 'Gold Rush' is older than DrummerGirl! HOW OLD AM I???

Those were the good old days. I mainly played Sierra Adventure games but I remember that Wing Commander game with it's *hot* 256 color graphics - my PC at the time was top of the line; 16 MHz, 640K RAM, no hard drive, EGA (16 color) graphics, and was running DOS 6!

im under 22, and i have more dos games then i have windows games, and ive got like 80 windows cd games. I have kings quest 1 through 8, which arnt all dos games btw. Ive been gaming since before I could even read. I was born for gaming. So, you know, Ive got no life  http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif . But I do have a billion dos games, tho, they wont work with windows me  http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif . And alot ofem are scratched beyond all recognition, but still, Ive probably got more then anyone else in toj. OWNED http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif  On a side note, kings quest roxors and they shouldnt have stopped with 8, whole adventure genre died out for no good reason. Now, for the real question, have you beat all of the kings quest games!?!?

Terminator Furure Shock. Fps with large enviroments. Kinda like a old version of Halo. You can probably get it on eBay. Has a multiplayer expansion "SkyNET". Nice. Yes. I speak. In broken sentences.

I have beaten KQ 1-4, and got half-way thru 5. I guess I stopped playing games altogether at that point, was getting older and hanging out with friends more and had some weird interest in those friends of the opposite gender...now here I am, playing all kinds of games and married too!

This is the life!

5 and 6 were good, 7 was a bit disneyish, and 8 was like zelda on truckers caffine pills, but better. ATM I dont have friends so i can play everything, ive even learned ancient languages for game. Seriously, none, nada, non existento (Yes, I did make that word up!) So if u need a game beat or hints on one come to meh, I am always open! Really, always, I mean it, I do nothing. I have lost most of my sanity somewhere, musta buried it with some other things. I never finished 1 because it was bugged and unbeatable, i got fed up with the rest cuz it made me miss hugos house of horrors, never did get to finish that game before the fire *sniff*

Did you know some developers came out with an enhanced version of KQ1? Also, I think Sierra came out with an enhanced 16 colors version, too.

ACK...I stayed up until 1AM playing KQ5. And of course, I stroll into work about 8:30AM...and walk right past the boss' office. He didn't see me though...

So, the "fire"? What's that all about? And why don't you have any friends??? You seem like a fun guy to hang out with, for the most part...

J/K of course, but seriously...whats up?

I remember quite a bit of the Sierra adventure titles. Although the title that got me hooked was Sierra's Black Cauldron based on the Disney adaptation of LLoyd Alexander's book. There was nothing more devastating then having your pig stolen by the dragon... Those were the days:

Move to the next screen...
Please insert disk B...
Move to next screen...
Please insert disk A...
Move to next screen...
Please insert disk B...
...

Also, did you find the easter egg in Kings Quest 2? There is a rock at the top of the mountain you can look under and it previews Space Quest. But of course my favorite part of that is when your near the witch's cave and the batmobile drives by... Dh Dh Dh Dh Dh Dh BATMAN!!!

Okay, so I wasn't totally into computer games until I actually owned my own PC (1999), but I do have, with the help of close high school friends quite the collection of old school Strategy Game Series mainly from Koei.  See if you have any of these or even know some of the titles...

Nobunaga's Ambition (nes)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 1-4 & 6 & 7 (that's nes through PS2)
Genghis Khan (nes)
Genghis Khan 2 (snes)
Kessen I & II (PS2)

If you can't guess we are really into Ancient Far East history.  Many strategies can be found in these games, especially from the book, The Art of War, the war manual written by Sun Tzu.  These had some of the best strategies techniques you could have in games.  The graphics were poor and they still use still frame pictures in most but once you get a taste for the control you have on taking over the country you are hooked...

Whon you should really really really play Dynasty Warriors 3 for ps2. That game is awesome, and it takes place during the Three Kingdom era, around the 100s-300s. A lot of the playable characters were real people, which I didn't know until I sat one of my Chinese friends in front of the TV and he started telling me about all the characters!

Whon

I've read up on the game, haven't got to play it yet, but it read pretty good. It's like Three Kingdoms, all the characters were actual people. A lot of research was put into these games, they even know what type of weapns were their favorite and what they did in the timelines, quite impressive in itself. Tasty, if you want to impress your friend get Three Kingdoms 7 and read all the bios on the people, you'll learn a ton. Plus in 7 you can be an officer rather then a ruler and dueling comps. are a blast, specially the aggressive moves.

You have a copy of King's Quest 5 and you didn't tell me? -_-

While I never played 5, I did play 6 (it came with the first "multimedia kit" my parents bought) and loved it. I'm still trying to hunt down a copy that will work in Windows 2000.

Oh, and speaking of classing gaming, I have happened to compile a CD of classic games, though perhaps not as ancient as the ones discussed on this thread. Doom, Hexen, Quake 1, Stargunner, and other assorted titles. I also compiled a second CD with maps and game enhancements, such as Doom Legacy (http://legacy.newdoom.com/) and the bliss that is Tenebrae (http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/).

Yesh, I'm old-school, but I also dig playing Doom and Quake with souped-up graphics. Games like Starflight tend to freak out on a Windows 2000 machine with a 1GHz machine, but, meh, I still have copies of SF1 and SF2.

And hey, if you dig classic DOS games, then you all might be surprised to know that I wrote one in DOS with the help of a few classmates during my senior year in high school. Check it out (http://www.toj.cc/members/tek7/files/parth20.zip) if you need a good laugh. http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Of course, there's also the topic of emulation, but that's a thread unto itself...

02-03-2003, 09:15 PM
Oh, and yes, I've moved this topic, too. You can find it in the Christian Gamers Alliance General Discussion Forum. http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've got some of the old Flight Sim stuff. Dark Forces. Descent II. Civ and Colonization. Transport Tycoon Deluxe. And a whole archive of the Infocom text-adventure games. I was really into gaming until I went off to college. Played a few Mac games, but there wasn't too much at the time. It was over 10 years until I got back into it. Unfortunately, I missed a bunch of great games during that time. The DOS games I have were mostly purchased well after the games' lifetime had run out. But I am always buying older games that have proved themselves as 'great' over time.

Tek, and others running WIN 2K or WIN NT:

Go here:

http://ntvdm.cjb.net/

This will help solve the problem of playing old DOS games on NT boxes. It works perfectly! Also, I would suggest running the VDMS Launcher - it helps set it up pretty nicely. Just a quick note: if you use this utility and have a SoundBlaster card, change the IRQ to 5, instead of 7.

Just like Plankeye, it was The Black Cauldron that got me hooked on the Sierra Adventure games. After playing through it, I played through Kings Quest 1 - 4, but I didn't get to play 5 until much later (it never game out for Apple IIgs). Eventually I got to play KQ5 on nintendo, but it just wasn't the same, but I acquired and beat the game on PC when I finally got my Acer Acros 486DX2-66.

I remember playing Police Quest & Gold Rush too. I enjoyed them, but never quite as much as The Black Cauldron and the Kings Quest series.

Now I'm gonna have to go home and break out my KQ collection. As I'm thinking about them, I honestly can't remember much about KQ6, and I never really did beat KQ8.

Any of you like any of the lucasarts adventures too?

The Monkey Island games, in my opinion, are some of the absolutely best adventure games ever made.

one thing i never liked about the KQ games is you could do something wrong, that would make it so you couldnt win the game, and go through the entire game right up to the end and not know it.

Shadow Troopers......How I hate thee!
Dark Forces was fun, but I thought it was only for the PSX.
I swear to you: once a few years ago I was up at six and I popped in Dark Forces. By total freaking accident, I typed in the password that gave me access to The ARc Hammer....and I got my butt shortly whipped by those dern Shadow Troopers.
Descent II....never played it. Played III and Freespace...but never II.
Doom was fun! I always wanted to play Hexen...never did.

Funny you should ask. I just saw it the other day at my local Goodwill. Unfortunately, they mark ALL games as $7.99. Both old and new. I thought that was kind of steep for REAL old DOS games. But I figure, they probably have no idea it's that old of a game.

SSquared

Hmmm. The software seemed like it was in decent condition. They had some more old DOS stuff, but all I can remember is some Advanced D&D game.

I ended up buying the books "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" for $2 each. http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif My wife and I were quite happy. Couldn't find "The Hobbit" or "Fellowship", but we had already taken those out of the library, anyway.

My first computer was an 8086 with a single floppy drive (that is right kiddos, no hard drive) and a 16 color RGB monitor.  The first "game" I played was the asteroid like game that was a part of typing tutor where letters fell down from the sky and you had to type the correct ones in.

I got pretty good at basic by typing in and running the basic games that came in the back of Home Computing magazine.  Those were the days.  Back when you could fit 50-100 games on one disk instead of the one game on 5+ CDs.

I also got pretty good at configuring DOS bootdisks as it was always dificult making the right configuration as some games required a minimum of 512k of memory free.

The first real game I remember was Chuck Yeager's Flight simulator.  You could fly several different planes.  Whenever you crashed, a horribly digitized face of Chuck Yeager would pop up with some funny one liner like "You bought the farm on that one".  I followed that up with games like the original Hardball and Test Drive.  They only came in monochrome or cga.  For those of you who don't remember, monochrome and cga monitors could only display 4 colors.  You had to send in an extra 5-10 dollars to get the "color" disk.

I don't know about the rest, but do you remember the mail order shareware?  Before Apogee (Commander Keen & Duke Nukem) and id (Doom) made shareware popular.  I got several games from there including a couple that were pretty good like a chopper game and an f-18 hornet simulator.

Kaiine
02-05-2003, 05:43 PM
Plankeye - no, I do not remember old shareware. I was a bad "pirate" and ran an illegal BBS with my buddies in Junior High School! We sold games for like $2/disk, and we had to ask whether it was DD or HD! I didn't have a hard drive either. I begged and begged my mom to buy me one, but a 20 or 40 MB (yes, that's right, megabyte) cost around $300. I just ran DOS right off the floppy!

SSquared - Where do you live? I ask because I collect old Sierra games and that one is hard to find...maybe we can make some "arrangement"...

Hmmm! Sounds cool.
I only have an old MSDOS system that could take a hard drive and a floppy drive, and of course, my precious today computer, complete with CD and Floppy drives, and a burning drive, and a hard drive.
So I have two systems, and I only use the old one to play older games that aren't out on CD, like Ultima Underworld

SSquared
02-05-2003, 06:36 PM
Plankeye - Although Pong and Atari were already available, the first computery games I played were on a Wang monochrome with tape drive. There were actually no computer games, but my brother realized you could make the letters move on the screen giving the sense they were moving. He and his friends wrote a few games, like a subhunt (popular handheld game at the time) type of game. Loading off a tape was horrible. It was super slow as you can imagine.

I was more in the Commodore 64 and Mac world during the early DOS days. Although I programmed on an 8086 in college, I would say I never really had PC experience until Windows 3.1 had come out.

Elite: I live in the Northwest. That Codename game is from Sierra? I was at Goodwill about 3 weeks ago, so I don't know if it's still there. But I will now keep my eye out for old Sierra games. The only one I'm looking for is the Space Quest series. I'm not sure when I'd get time to play it, but it looks like it might be sorta funny. I'm sure I can probably get it on Ebay, but I'm not in any rush.

I even wrote a walkthrough for it http://www.cgalliance.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . You can probably dl it somewhere for free, it's been released as far as I know.

Also, there's a game studio that lets you make old sierra/lucas arts type adventures. Very powerful. Visit www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk if interested.

Believe it or not, some of us 17 year olds did get started very early. I remember playing rpg called "Castle". You could move around as a little smiley face (not this :-), the straight up and down ASCII one), and you had to type things in to the game to tell the little man what to do, besides move of course. This was somewhere in the year of 1990-91 maybe? Good stuff.

Cool MaxX!!! I've heard of it. 'Sposed to be good. I'm on a longterm quest to buy LucasArts stuff (I have 15 or so by now). I would like to get the old DOS Indiana Jones series as I've heard they were very good.

Yes, the Space Quest series. Really funny - my personal favorite was Space Quest III. They had the main character (his name is Roger Wilco - just like the voice comm software) visit this planet where this huge software company resided. The company was called "Scumsoft". Supposedly a ripoff from Microsoft.

You can actually download the Space Quest series - search on Abandonware sites. You will find a lot of old games you might be able to download. I do believe both Sierra and LucasArts have some copyright protection on them even they are old "abandoned" games that they don't make or sell anymore.

SSquared - Yes, Codename: Iceman is from Sierra. The guy who created the Police Quest series created this game as well. If you happen to go back to Goodwill and see it there, I wouldn't mind cutting a little deal with you!
