I searched half the internet for one ;) and here are a few:
http://gapingwolf.com/halflight/ - seems to work well
http://www.twilightgames.com/platypus/platypus_info.htm - not free, but looks cool

Abuse!!! look for it on www.gamehippo.com, it is the COOLEST freeware sidescrolling shooter for PC.

EDIT: oops, I didn't realize you said SPACE shooter, well abuse is still worth looking into.
