Help me pick a dedicated server hosting plan for Tribe of Judah

Here are the options.

If you don't like Art of War Central, please post why and recommend an alternative.

I want to have a dedicated server up and running before February 1, 2011.

After we pick a dedicated server hosting plan, I'll be calling on members to pledge monthly donations to cover the increased expenses.

I can tell you right now..don't go with the atom.
Roger that. I'll keep that in mind.

The "AMD X2 2.3GHz 2nd month free" looks promising...
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.3Ghz 2nd month free
* 4+ GB
* 250 GB
* Unlimited Gaming Bandwidth*
* 10 or 100mbps port
* Free unlimited game tech support
* Handles up to 128 game slots**
* Setup time: 1 to 7 days
I was leaning toward a beefier machine. Back when we were still leaning toward purchasing a dedicated server instead of renting, we were looking at servers with 4 or 8 cores.

But I didn't think to explain that we'd be choosing from the Power or Monster options rather than Value when I made the post. Sorry 'bout that.

We may also pick out 2 or 3 potential plans then make the final selection based on how much members are able to commit to monthly donations. If the community can support a beefier server, we'll get a beefier server. If not, we'll get what we can afford.

As for choosing between plans, I'm certainly no expert on the topic. That's why I'm presenting the question to ToJ. It's less of a "How does this make you feel?" question and more a "Here are your options, pick something" situation.

This is all I know...the main resource the MC server sucks is RAM...as a matter of fact it takes anywhere from 512MB to 1GB of RAM depending on how many people are on...however, it only uses (currently) less than 100MBs of hard drive space...heh... I am not sure what it takes to run the other servers...

to keep the costs from getting way out of control i would go for the Intel Core2Quad 2.4Ghz because it's ram you are going to need with game servers these days.

Yeah, the MC server is running on the slowest computer in my house (like a 2.4ghz dual core from 3-4 years ago) and it is only using between 1 and 5 percent of the CPU...and that is with people on...

I don't know about the other games we host, but UT3 is processor intensive (it's even processor bound for most client machiens... not video card bound like most games).

"2x Intel Quad Core Xeon E552" Ooooh. I don't know what it all means, but it does come with 6 gigs of RAM. :p

Okay, I just spent half an hour on the phone with Art of War Central. Given the list of servers we plan on running, the sales rep recommended the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz with 4GB RAM.

Based on a quick estimate, our target for additional monthly donations is approximately $150 USD.

A few key points of the conversation:
  • Minecraft is a RAM hog, requiring 1GB at a minimum. I'd be looking to Minecraft players to help cover the expense of additional RAM.
  • Running a Battlefield Bad Company 2 server on a dedicated box means forfeiting direct access to the box, which in turn means that running a BC2 server on the dedicated box is right out. A 24-slot BC2 server with Art of War would run an additional $23.76 a month. (We currently pay $19.99 for a 16-slot server.) In the case of canceled monthly donations, BC2 would be the first expense-saving cut.
  • The sales rep recommended Windows over Linux, which surprised me. What surprised me even more was that running Windows instead of Linux would only increase the monthly expense by $10.
  • We're clear to run a file redirect on the dedicated server so long as we're not transferring several hundred gigabytes of data in map downloads (which I don't think will be an issue). If we cancel our high-speed redirect with DefconServers and move it to the dedicated box, it may be worth taking the $10 we save and spending on it on an upgrade from a 10Mbit port to a 100Mbit port.
  • Windows boxes are managed by RDP. Linux boxes are managed by SSH and whatever tools we choose to install.
  • The sales rep wasn't very clear on whether Art of War allows customers to host adult content (i.e. pornography), so we'll need to read over the Terms of Service closely before choosing Art of War.
  • Art of War Central's parent company is called North American Game Technologies. I'll be researching the parent company further before choosing a dedicated server hosting provider.
I'd like to hear thoughts on Windows vs. Linux for the purpose of hosting game servers.

And a $319 starting price tag.

The plans I'm looking at range between $190 and $220.

But we could consider the plan you mentioned for future expansion.

Which reminds me: The sales rep said there's no transfer fees involved with upgrading from one dedicated server to another. So if we go with Art of War Central and want to upgrade in the future, we don't have to worry about getting hit with a nasty transfer or upgrade fee. (The more powerful box would still cost more per month, of course.)

I was told by a sales rep a while back that they don't allow adult content btw.... He then went on to tell me gameservers did.... but this was from a sales rep who makes money because people rent servers from them >.>

I plan on at least skimming the Art of War Central Terms of Service soon, but I'm really, really hoping they don't allow customers to host pornographic web sites. Because if they do, I'm going to have to scratch Art of War off the list of candidates and Tribe of Judah will take its business elsewhere.

Posting to show acknowledgment. Unfortunately, I know nothing about gaming servers. I don't really have anything to contribute. Sorry, guys.

Since no one has recommended alternatives, we will plan to set up a dedicated server hosting account with Art of War Central if and when Tribe of Judah members pledge monthly donations sufficient to cover the expense.

:rolleyes: sounds good to me tek. I'd like to give more then I already do, but for right now I'm maxed... would really love to see some more members step up and help ToJ prosper.

I have the MC server topped at 1.5GBs of RAM, not allowing it to go over, and it is running well, even with 10 people on...and barely any CPU usage...
