1 John 1:8-9Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

8 If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Normally I hear only vs 9 quoted, which is good, a Bible promise. It was an early verse to memorize in the Navigators memorization system. Just don't ignore vs 8, we need to be reminded of our sinful condition if we want to claim vs 9, giving us a reason to confess out sins to God and claim the promise in 9.
