Suggestion from a noob

I'm new around these parts. I'm happy to have found SoE, and have guild of like minded folks... I don't want to make any enemies ofanyone here, but want to get this out.

This forums is quite frustratingly filled with spam. On a page introducing myself, there were 19 replies, and only maybe 3 had anything to do with introductions,or replies. Nearly every thread seems to be that way. I realize that there are lots of folks in the Guild and not many active users to the forum... and this may very well be my last post, perhaps that is why. I know that the active posters seems to be content with the level of spam.... but you might want to think about how outsiders/non-participants to the forums perceive SoE.

One solution might be to have an OFF Topic sub-forum. I probably will continue to check this post out, but this may be my last post.

Sorry to rain on the parade, hope I haven't upset too many folks.

it's ChickenSoup's fault.

and, in regard to your suggestion, we are working on getting more forums for our Guild.

anyhow, part of the reason of our contentment with the levels of spam, is because much of it is casual conversation between us. this creates a sort of bond between us, which I think is beneficial to the guild. this forum isn't for pure reference to anyone who is looking for info, but more of as a discussion board for the guild, only.

what part of the spam do you not like? is it the amount of topics? or is it the difficulty in finding builds and strategies?

Thinking about it more, it's more that every thread dissolves into spamming... and fair amount of the spam consists of inside jokes, not necessarily intentional, but because folks would have to
read through the entire archives of forums to figure out what they're about... in the thread introducing myself, I had to read through 2 pages of inside jokes, just to see if anyone else had said hello, and deserved a reply

Ya is kinda true, i was gone for like 5 days and come back and seemed lost. Not to mention it pushes newer ppl away who have a hard time blending in.

But once we get different sections then should fix that.....I hope.

mirawyn gives me cookies. sometimes.
(inside joke)

can't really do anything about them, lest you want to cut the life out of the board.

however, I support a seperate forum, where one is for serious topics, such as builds, and another just for conversation.

I've been begging for this since the website went up...lol. We just have way too many people not to have our forum organized.

Sorry about that.

And I will explain the cookies...since they won't go away.

The day before Valentine's Day I mentioned on TeamSpeak that I wouldn't be online very long because I was going to go bake cookies. The guys (especially dredd and Techwhosaysnee/Mike) became very obsessed with cookies after that. At one point they "held hostage" my "Playing Female Characters" thread, demanding cookies. It went from there. Now I have a photobucket account full of photos of cookies.

But it makes everyone happy. So I "give out" cookies...

And it's great meeting you. And now there is one less inside joke to be puzzled over.

We are sorry and I hope we dont keep you of the forums. Those who get on the forums and on teamspeak have become pretty close knit and I think that you will enjoy this time in your life by getting to know some very cool Christian men and women.

My initial reaction to this thread is to be defensive about our friendly but frequently haphazard threads of conversation, and to point out that few of us would be spending much time on these forums at all if we were restricted from OT rabbit-chases, spamz and geeky movie quotes. But I think Dredd's attitude is probably more appropriate. None of us here want to drive any new folks away. Perhaps we could make more use of our AWESOME website to separate out good information from social banter, for the sake of those looking for info rather than conversation. But I hope that our new folks will realize the difficulty of discouraging or restricting spam and OT diversions, or restricting them to only certain post or certain areas, without ruining our ability to express ourselves like we want and enjoy the kind of good Christian fellowship that this guild is really all about.

I like the fact that the website contains builds and articles. It's sorta the "best of" the forums. I think it's a good idea to repost the most important info there, for easy reference. (It also avoids the problem with useful stuff dropping off the last page of the forum.)

And some of us are trying very hard to behave ourselves.:D

The forums are fast, the website sloooooow
You are correct. The website is slow because the CMS doesn't play nice with the IIS webserver. I have the same cms and mods on my own site with an Apache/Linux host and it's very fast. I'm afraid there's not much I can do about it unless Joomla or IIS start to like each other.

I'd do a google and see what other people have suggested to make joomla and iis play nice.

It seems to be something with how iis executes the php, may just be a simple fix

Also everything on the website is on the forums just harder to find which is why they are now on the website to be found easier. Any other suggestions Tux? We like feedback.
