PC gamepad recommendations?

I <3 my Gravis Gamepad Pro USB. It was inexpensive when I bought it (and that was years ago), I didn't have to install drivers to use it on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, it's lightweight, and it's shaped just like a PS2 controller. The D-pad is a little stiff and you can tell it's a "value" product, but it gets the job done.

I use a gampad to play games like Recettear, Super Meat Boy, Jamestown, and Streets of Rage Remake. Coupled with Xpadder, I've even used it to play Chime.

But I've had my eyes on the Logitech F710 for a while now. My laptop has a HDMI Out port, my HDTV has multiple HDMI In ports (of course), and I have a great-quality 10-ft. HDMI cable. I'd love to play games like Jamestown on my HDTV and the F710 is wireless and has dual analog sticks (something unheard of at the time the Gravis Gamepad Pro USB was designed, if memory serves).

I've read some glowing reviews of the F710, but I keep coming across complaints of finicky and very short range wireless reception. One review suggested opting for a Xbox 360 controller instead, but the "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows" package seems to cost about $20-$25 more than the F710. I've also never liked the layout of the analog sticks on the 360 controller. I prefer the PlayStation controller layout, especially for dual analog stick-intensive games like Katamari Damacy.

So I'd like to hear from others who use gamepads on their PC. What controllers would you recommend? And yes, I'm still convinced that keyboard and mouse are the best controls for a FPS or RTS or MMO. But when it comes to platformers and most shmups (especially now that holding down the left mouse button for extended periods is a beast on my hands), it's gotta be a gamepad. Well, with the notable exception of Trine, but my point still stands.

EDIT: It doesn't help that I can't find a brick and mortar store that sells the F710. A gamepad is the kind of item that you want to see and handle before purchasing. At least I know what a 360 controller feels like.

EDIT#2: And man, I <3 those USB receiver nubs. I have one for my Logitech v450 and one for my Logitech MK550 Wireless Wave Combo (keyboard and mouse). I'm a fan of Logitech products (I also own a MX518 and a Marble Mouse, which is actually a trackball). I'm just not sure if their gamepads are as great as their mice.

I have no wireless gamepad experience.
I use a gamestop branded (mad catz) wired 360 personally, I love it. Xpadder is great.
You reality need to try champions online again with a gamepad, it makes the game 3x more enjoyable.

I think it's funny you said hdmi cable and great quality.

Xpadder is indeed great.

I was hoping to steer clear of wired gamepads since I plan to be playing from my couch at times (with my laptop plugged in to the HDTV via HDMI). The stock wired 360 controller is 9 feet long and, even if it reaches, it would be a hazard once my daughter starts walking.

It's truly bizarre to read that a MMO would be more fun with a gamepad. I played CO during beta, so I know what you mean, but still odd.

I also found that funny.

Since it is Logitech, I would assume that the quality is there.
Well, I meant that my HDMI cable is of excellent quality. I bought it for ~$17 shipped and it's a very sturdy cable with great compatibility and high-quality parts. The same cable in the store would have probably run ~$50 or 60.

CO was originally designed to play on the 360 so many of the controller support is in the PC version. There is something about swinging and superjumping around with the controller that is really satisfying. The rumble is nice and you can pull off moves with the analog sticks that you can't with a mouse due to the pressure sensitive accuracy.

Razr makes a wired controller that has a 15ft cord. It also has higher sticks so you don't need speedfreeks. (I love razr products almost as much as logitech personally) http://www.razerzone.com/minisite/onza

But I agree that wireless would be better for couch/tv.

HDMI is a on/off technology, it either works or it doesn't, there is no variation in quality depending on the cable.

So I bought a Logitech F710 from Newegg for $35 shipped on July 12. Got it in the mail a few days later and have been enjoying it since.

The F710 still doesn't feel as comfortable as a DualShock3, but, then again, I can't think of anything else that does. It's MUCH more convenient than using MotioninJoy and having my PS3 turn on every time I disconnect the DS3 from my computer.

The tiny nano receiver is great, the controller emulates a wireless Xbox 360 controller so compatibility is terrific, and the wireless signal seems pretty strong so far. I'd read that some users had trouble with the wireless range on the F710, but I haven't had any issues so far--even when playing Jamestown from the couch. (HDTV + Laptop with HDMI Out+ wireless gamepad = PC gaming goodness.)

Now that I have a wireless gamepad, I've been playing more games like Braid, Super Meat Boy, Jamestown, Chime (yes, Chime has 360 controller support and the game is better with a gamepad), Everyday Shooter, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, etc. etc.

I'm dreaming of the day I buy or build a beefy but thinline form factor media center PC that can also function as a torrent box (<3 for fansubbed anime), media center PC, Blu-ray player, and PC game "console."
