Steadfast and Sure

How can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

-Hebrews 2:3 (NRSV)

THE Letter to the Hebrews strongly encourages us to pay attention to God's word and to obey it. The admonition to all believers is clear: there is danger in neglecting our great salvation in Jesus Christ, for we can "drift away" (Heb. 2:1). Hebrews 6:19 reminds us that in Christ we have "a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul." When we give way to transgression or disobedience, the anchor does not move -- we do. We are called as Christians to anchor our lives continually in the great salvation that God gives us in Christ.

God calls us today to renew our "attention to what we have heard" (Heb. 2:1), to anchor our lives in God's word. Meditation on God's word inspires prayer; prayer nourishes faithful church membership; and vital church life motivates our witnessing for Christ in a world that is adrift.

Ours is indeed a great salvation. Through the grace that works in us, the church, God offers the world an anchor that is steadfast and sure -- if we faithfully share the love that we see in Jesus Christ.

Prayer:
Source of life, help us to realize how great is our salvation and to embrace it in word and deed, today and always. Amen.
