I feel like Mesmers are in general great for WvW, with or without portal. They have excellent support skills, plus the illusions can confuse (no pun intended) enemies a lot.

You should be able to get enough gold via TP and general gameplay (getting lucky with unidentified dyes, or just selling all unIDed dyes for 4-5s) to afford pretty much anything on the gem store you could want. I got an extra character slot with 2g from selling a Black Dye.

Does WvW have a separate trait build? In other words, can you put traits in different things than PvE without resetting traits?

That YouTube Mesmer guide is very well done. I've watched all the videos, and it's clear that the creator of the videos is a much more skilled player than me, but I still think I could use his leveling build to good effect. I have long used Longbow as main weapon, switching to Axe+Warhorn when fighting multiple enemies or to apply the #5 skill buffs from warhorn. I am currently testing Sword+Axe as the swap set. I don't like it as much yet, but I want to give it some time.

Here is a Level 1 - 400 Cooking Guide. I have done this up to 175 (as far as I can get without needing the Karma vendor in the 40+ zones.. I'm only level 24). I imagine someone who is level 60 can do this in about 3 hours with not much money or karma.
