A Random Thought

Well "old" might not have been the most correct word to use, as there are many days I feel old myself at just 46 in seeing all the younger people who are stronger, faster, and more powerful than me. But I definitely feel the lack of having elder members around to engage with, and while I might be considered at the level of elder-in-training at this point, I know I don't yet have what it takes to offer the same kind of stabilizing presence and mature guidance that they did.

Not meaning at all to discount the importance of people in my own age group, but contemplating that there may be different division-of-labor roles between mid-life people and older generations in a community, and that those who are younger might not have the means to truly replace the contributions of the older if they become silenced or absent.
