I just got the w32.pinfi virus and I was wondering if any of you could help. I was able to get most of the infected files quarentined with AVG as norton wouldet work. Some couldent be quarentined though. I went into the registry and deleted the value that I was supposed to delete. But I still can get the files healed. I dont know what to do now should I reformat or is there some things I dont know about. I would appreciate any help.

I had this awile back really bad virus. I ran Norton in safe mode 3 times to get all of it from my .exe's then went to another site like antivirus.com and ran theres free off there site then removed the value from the registery then ran Trojan Remover. Also a good idea not to send any files to anyone its usualy attached to them if you do.

Thanks both of you. Looks like I pretty much have it under control maby ill have to run antivirus a few more times and uninstall some things.

I had to delete some important files or rather did it kind of accidently. So do you think it would be a safe bet to reformat? I dont know if it is still lurking or not.

everything still running without those files? a windows repair may be less painful? run norton again to make sure all is clear

I dont know what the files were but there were alot. Mostly game files and stuff. But there was one for the sound control which is the important one. So now my subwoofer is always at 100% so I always have to wear headphones. I will run norton which is another problem. Norton will scan but it wont update for some reason. What is a windows repair would it restore that sound file? Norton does have the virus definition for this one atleast.

the sound could be windows or a driver specific file I can't tell you which unless I know the filename. sounds like a nasty virus there...

A good internet place to go to is www.housecall.antivirus.com
You can scan your computer from online with the latest of virus definitions.  It will even detect and kill viruses designed to disable Nortons.  (I experienced this first hand.)

As for file repair, you can try start-run-sfc<enter>  System File Checker.  (caution!  If you use system file checker, do NOT restore the file 'user.exe')

And after that, just reload your applications/games/drivers and see if that patches over what you lost.

Just some thoughts.

The sound thing was the thing you get when you go into Start-Program-Accessories-Entertainment-Volume Control. I tried to access it with my sound card drivers but nothing happens when I click so that file must control the whole thing. Thank you for the link Malohaut ill look at it.

get it from another machine with the the same OS or use the expand command and look for it in the cab files from your windows CD
