Genesis1315

AND THEY CRUCIFIED HIM
A medical doctor provides a physical description: The cross is placed on the ground and the exhausted man is quickly thrown backwards with his shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist. He drives a heavy, square wrought-iron nail through the wrist deep into the wood. Quickly he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flex and movement. The cross is then lifted into place. The left foot is pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees flexed. The victim is now crucified.
As he slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating fiery pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain -- the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves. As he pushes himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, he places the full weight on the nail through his feet. Again he feels the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the bones of his feet.
As the arms fatigue, cramps sweep through his muscles, knotting them deep relentless, and throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push himself upward to breathe. Air can be drawn into the lungs but not exhaled. He fights to raise himself in order to get even one small breath.
Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream, and the cramps partially subsided. Spasmodically, he is able to push himself upward to exhale and bring in life-giving oxygen. Hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-renting cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from his lacerated back as he moves up and down against rough timber. Then another agony begins: a deep, crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart. It is now almost over. The loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level. The compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood into the tissues. The tortured lungs are making frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. He can feel the chill of death creeping through his tissues.
Finally, he allows his body to die.
All this the Bible records with the simple words, "and they crucified Him" (Mark 15:24).

Promise not to laugh? I get faint at the sight of blood. Even worse, the mention of medical practices: surgeries, broken bones, body fluid...makes me woozy!
This was a beautiful post in allowing us to try and get a glimpse of what Jesus physically went through. I have often wondered when He sweat great drops of blood if it wasn't partially due to His knowing what He was about to endure.

I just finished a study by Beth Moore called Jesus the One and Only. There are several things that stand out to me about the crucifixion of Jesus and some things that I have wondered forever have been answered. I hope you won't mind me sharing them here.

I don't think there is anything that can make us realize what a Sacrifice it was for Jesus to bear all our sins on the cross. The post describing the crucifixion helps. But the Bible says in Isaiah 52:14

As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

Mel Gibson came close, but not entirely accurate. Jesus was beaten to the point He was unrecognizable as a man.

Jesus encourages us to pray and He is our example. These links contain pictures of the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives. This was Jesus usual place to pray.

And he came out, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives: and his disciples also followed him. Luke 22:39

The other thing that was finally answered for me was why Jesus was not able to be touched.

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John 20:17

I never understood the full implications of this. This innocent, loving touch was the enemy's last ditch effort to mar the perfect Sacrifice of Jesus before He went to the Father. What would He do when He went to the Father? He would place His blood on the altar as the final/once for all, Sacrifice!

There was something else that Beth Moore pointed out that I failed to mention. Judas knew exactly where to find Jesus. Granted, He was in the usual place that He went to for prayer. Nevertheless, had He not been there, and even though Judas was to betray Him, Jesus still called him His friend...Judas would have been able to find Jesus...for He can always be found when we seek Him.

For I know of the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11~13
