After not really caring about anime for the first 19 years of my life, I suddenly found myself desiring to watch as much as I could. I got through Blood+ a week or two ago, and I thought I'd share my insights on it without giving away any of the plot, hoping that others would do the same so I could know what animes to watch in the future.
Name: Blood+
Synopsis: There's a world inhabited with vampire-like thinks (Chiroptera, as they are called), unknown to the general public. The anime focuses on the struggle between different groups of the Chiroptera, as well as both their struggles with mankind.
Nickname: Super awesome vampire ninja anime.
Plot: 10/10
In a word, the plot was amazing. Plot twists were elaborately strung into the entire 50 episodes. Characters were carefully woven and acted as they should have in most circumstances. Everything came to a nice conclusion in the end.
I feel obligated to note that my criticisms of plots are usually harsh, which is why I hesitated to hand out a 10/10. In truth, this plot is comparable to that of Heroes Season 1 in its complexity, and nearly to that par on execution. As a benefit, there were no "why didn't she just..." stingers, for example, why didn't Hiro just teleport the bad guys away in the first place, or try again and again should he fail?
Characters: 8/10
The characters were mostly believable and did actions that they should have. A few characters frustrated me in that the writers wanted to make the character a deep, troubled soul, but sacrificed the character's like-ability in order to do so (i.e. made them look like a ninny). As a result, a few of the episodes suffered, but when looking at the series as a whole, it doesn't affect it drastically.
Visuals: 10/10
The animation was done well. My knowledge of anime visuals sums a small amount, and as such I'll make Blood+ my benchmark for how visuals should be.
The battle sequences were amazing to watch, especially the Sif with their draped silver movements. It was awesome to watch and very memorable.
Music: 10/10
The score to this anime was FANTASTIC! Diva's singing was beautiful, and Haji's chello was rock solid awesome. The rest of the music flowed well, and never made me question the sanity of anyone on the production crew.
Content
I won't give a score here, because this all depends on the person.
Violence: Lots of it! Plenty of blood (as the title suggests) and gore. Some beings get sliced in half, others get limbs torn off, or even tear them off themselves.
Language: Medium to light amount. I heard bombs of the A, B, D, F, and S type. The total number is low, I'd say no more than 50 times in the total 50 episodes.
Sex stuff: None. I do recall one "shower" scene, which was more of a side profile zoomed out of a female body. No nudity, but could be questionable for some people.
Drugs: None.
Occult: None. The vampire stuff, however, might raise an eyebrow or two.
Overall:
This anime deserves a solid 9/10. I'd recommend it for the mature viewer.
Please let me know if you have any questions on things you'd like me to add to my review list. Comments appreciated. I'll be posting another review similar to this for Dennou Coil later today or tomorrow, as I just finished that series up half an hour ago.
