Anyone Overclocking their computer?

I was wondering if I should upgrade to 2012 computer parts but was suggested that I should instead overclock my CPU.

I use a i7 920 2.67 Ghz and says it can be OC'ed to 4 Ghz.

I ordered a ssd hard drive and heatsink fan for my cpu to use overclocking.
I also plan to buy the GTX 670 graphics card when my overclocking is stable.

Anyways, from experienced overclockers, what are the pros/cons of overclocking?

That i7 is still relatively new. I think an SSD would improve your performance enough.

I dont think you need to OC it or replace it.

haha, traditionally OC'ing will burn out your equipment faster....

not sure there is that much to OC anymore, in the context that most hardware is fast enough to do most anything and oc doesnt help that much anymore.

dude...2.67 to 4ghz will be very noticeable in games, don't listen to the OC haters. =P Games are all about the ghz. (and a pimp video card of course)
OC'ing with proper heat mitigation will be fine on your equipment. You are talking about burning out the life span from like 10 years to 9 years. You will be upgrading long before you hurt anything.

I'll probably be asking more questions about overclocking when I get my new-to-me Intel E5200 installed in my new-to-me ASUS P5KPL-CM.

I ordered this heatsink/fan and this thermal grease from Newegg. Neither was expensive, so I pro won't push the processor too hard, but I may try bumping the speed up a bit.

Think I'm pushing my luck to overclock at all?

And to answer your question, Corp.fox: Based on what I've read, even an older i7 is still ridiculously powerful, so I'd advise against upgrading your processor as it likely isn't your system's bottleneck. If you're looking to upgrade anything, I'd recommend picking up a SSD as Odale suggested.

EDIT: That case looks awesome. Almost makes me want to break down and finally replace my monster Antec case.

Can I copy my OS from hard drive to ssd hard drive?

What ewok said. I would install a fresh copy of Windows, and use the same key that you have to activate.

Once installed, you can plug the drive back in as a secondary drive and copy all the important stuff to where it needs to go (My Documents, My Pictures, ect..).

Depending on the size of your SSD, you can format the old drive, and use it as a secondary storage drive.. Thats what I do with my SSD. Its only 128gigs, so I only have Windows and programs installed on it, and everything else (Steam w/games, Origin w/games, documents, pictures, music, Downloads..) on the secondary, much larger disk. :)

Ordered a OCZ Vertex 3 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 6Gbps SandForce SF-2281 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD and Corsair Cooling Air Series A50 Performance CPU Cooler LGA775 LGA1155 LGA1156 LGA1366 AM2 AM3.

I should have them within Wednesday.

I do have a 500GB Sata 2 hard drive and 1.5TB External.
I can copy them to my external then transfer to the ssd.

SSD would definitely make a huge improvement. And you would probably would want a fresh install the way SSDs work.

I recomend using a water cooler instead of a cpu fan if you are overclocking, they work much better in my experience. Plus I agree a SSD is the way to go.

Anyways, I got the items.

The Heatsink fan took a while to install while the SSD is disappointing.

It doesn't come with a Sata cable.

So, I hate to look through my boxes of computer stuff just for an extra Sata cable.

Can anyone here direct me to a good guide for overclocking my PC - or write something up yourself? I could google it, but I don't want to follow any bad advice. I'm not at all experienced in building or adjusting PC components, but I could follow a well-written set of instructions...

Name your specs, Marinus.

How do you go to BIOS?

I tried pressing the keys before start up and it either doesn't work or brings me to a memory diagnostics.

Its possible the keyboard is disabled when it happens.
