Are Warlocks a yes or no when it comes to a Christian?

Hey,

I'm new to this site. Now for my first post, I just wanted to say that I've been playing World of Warcraft for a while and what are your thoughts on Warlocks? I've been staying away from playing them solely because of the idea of their demon summoning and demon-based magic. I know it's all fictional, but is it okay for me to be concerned? :confused:
 
Of course it's ok for you to be concerned :) . If God is telling you don't do it don't do it.

My concern about such things is that it glorifies or desensitizes the world to the real deal not that you are personally going to take up witchcraft after playing one. To a degree you can probably say that about anything with magic in it. Though "magic" has been redefined away from purely occult usage over the years (CS Lewis's "deep magic" or performance illusions as "magic", etc.). The point is even if one can do some things without sinning personally we still have to think of our actions as viewed by others 1 Corinthians 8:13 . Regardless it seems avoiding things like this are, unfortunately, passe' nowadays :/. I wouldn't play one either if it means anything to you but you can probably find some Christians who have. Then again I've never been interested in WoW anyway (it's just not my thing).

I don't find that class choice is affected by my faith. That being said, I play a priest and a paladin. I also play a death knight though.

I personally have never played a warlock but I don't find it challenges my faith.

Such a thing is a personal decision. I avoid games which are over-sexualized because that is an area where the Enemy will attack me. Areas like the occult or warlocks and demonology have not been an avenue for the Enemy in my life so I would not feel a need to avoid them. I think prayer on the topic is the best course. Let God lead you.
 
I do not have a problem with it myself but I feel this is a personal decision between the believer and the HS. If you feel convicted to stay away, I would heed that.
 
If we seek to bring those to Christ supporting things that lead people away from him is counterproductive. Certainly no game is perfect the question is can we help more than we harm with what we play. Christian clans bring Christians together in fellowship and (hopefully) show light to the unsaved but they can also promote an acceptance of immorality if not mindful of their actions. If you want people to see Christ in you they are going to see everything else as well. You may be able to play a porn game avoiding lust but what does that say to the world? Supporting them with your money means they will make more porn games. Thus TV, movies and games are full of garbage nowadays because no one said no we should not support this. We strive to show Christ's character in our actions and words, in how we play, but even choosing to play or not play a game, or class, is an action. Regardless there are a lot of other games I would avoid supporting before WoW. Ones that actively seek to push the beliefs of homosexuality, atheism, Taoism, etc. with guile and emotion.

I may, depending on what it is meant by it, differ in the idea in it's a personal choice because everything we do effects others and I always believe there is a right and wrong choice, by God. We just don't always know what the right choice is and it may be different for some, or "personal", as Corinthians mentioned, but it's still there. Some things we should condemn though as the Bible does.

I wouldn't sweat playing a warlock class so much. I don't think that many people take it, or really the whole game, seriously. Ask what does the Bible say and ask yourself if you can see Jesus doing it. If you can see Jesus doing it go for it, if not don't. Peace :) .

Gerbil makes a good point about supporting games that push that ideal.

I could play a game that exhibits a polytheistic world, but if it was built upon a story or theme which was visibly anti-Christian, then I would not.
 
Gerbil's whole point I think is that people judge Christianity not by Christ but by the Christians they see and what those Christians say and do.

Paul was very clear that in Christ, we have liberty. However, that liberty comes with a price called responsibility. We must always be aware of our actions and how they portray Christ to those around us.

The question more often than not for things like this is not "Can I do this?" but "Should I do this?". Generally, if you are asking if something is ok or not, you already know the answer and are just looking for a way around what God has already told you.
 
Wolf and Direpath yes that is what I am saying.

Regardless of whether he knows the answer and is asking for approval deep down, or if he has legitimate doubts, we should always be asking (ourselves at least) "should I be doing this". WWJD in everything. If we truly seek to pursue God's will there is nothing we can leave out of asking that question. Whatever the original poster decides I want to assure him he's on the right track asking it. Some would say "it's just a game, movie or whatever" to him thinking he is neurotic. I want to assure him he is not. We need more thought in this world and less "everybody else does it". (/off topic which is basically why I dislike the cram every moment with something diverting mentality. Got to talk on the cell, got to play on the handheld, got to post every minute of my life on Twitter. It won't kill people to spend time in thought, be still and know he is God sometime... Gerbil prattles on...).

I dunno about this WWJD deal. Maybe if you are asking What Would Jesus have me Do? Or what would those closest to Jesus do? Jesus was not some ultimate do-gooder. He was God which is wholly unlike you and me. I am not so sure we should take topics like this and try to fit how God would act in that situation and try to imitate that, that is going to get ridiculously hypocritical quickly no?

Nope I don't see any exemptions for when we don't do these things, just lots of "alls" :) .

It's true that Christ set an unattainable example but one does not lower the example because one can't make it. Run like you mean to win even if you know you can't!

...but like I said before everything on Earth is imperfect so we are going to have to put up with stuff. Only the positive should outweigh the negative in deciding our actions. So are they profitable?

There is a big difference between what those verses are saying and turning around and telling some one to picture if the God of the universe would play video games and to go with that as an answer...
 
More along the lines of
Would you be comfortable playing that video game if Christ was sitting in the chair beside you?
instead of
Would Christ play that video game?

However, the WWJD example is very relevant because WE are the only Christ some people will ever see.
 
Yeah, that one I like better however, while it is actually true, Christ is here with us, how come I know that if he was really in the flesh sitting next to me, playing video games would be so far from my mind altogether.

As you like :) . I don't have a problem envisioning Christ playing a video game, only with him playing particular ones and how he would play them. That the God of the universe would become a man at all is pretty mind blowing itself. Though I also don't see a problem with using the idea of Christ sitting next to you instead.

If you're not comfortable with playing a warlock character, you don't have to. World of Warcraft offers many other character classes that you can play and enjoy, and it's ultimately up to you to choose which character aligns with your personal preferences and comfort level. If you decide to give warlocks a try, you can always modify your experience by adjusting the game's settings or by choosing to play in a different way.

Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what is and isn't okay for you in a game. If you have any concerns, it's always best to communicate them with the developers or other players to find a solution that works for you.

Hi also new! It's ok to not play if it isn't your cup of tea: if it irks you then by all means don't play a lock. That being said: I've played warlock in WoW off and on since 2007. Worse my main one is a Gnome! [Just kidding nothing wrong with gnomes]. I play Horde and Alliance.
In terms of faith. I'm reminded of the idea that we should question if something causes us to sin or not. I don't think wow in any way resembles any kind of reality of summoning drmons or being unread or angels. I do think we can draw our personal lines where we need to.

I agree with your point about personal lines. In WoW, we play as warlocks, but that doesn't mean we're summoning real demons or aligning ourselves with dark forces in our actual lives. It's all about escapism and enjoying the thrill of wielding powerful magic, even if it comes from a slightly unconventional source.

Each individual must decide where they draw the line between fantasy and reality. If playing as a warlock makes you feel uncomfortable or goes against your personal beliefs, feel free to choose another path. World of Warcraft offers plenty of other awesome classes to explore!
