THE THRONE OF GOD
1) A throne of universal government
Psalm 11:4, The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord is on His heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; His eyes examine them.
►J. Vernon McGee, “The headquarters of the universe is in heaven.”
Psalm 9:7-8, The Lord reigns forever; He has established His throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness; He will govern the peoples with justice.
Psalm 89:14, Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
►Righteousness = doing right; God’s love of holiness
►Justice = righting the wrong; God’s hatred of sin
2) A throne of unending glory
Jer. 14:21, For the sake of Your name do not despise us; do not dishonor Your glorious throne.
Rev. 4:9-11, Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power…”
► Tim LaHaye, “The central object of heaven is the throne of God. It seems to be a fixed point, with everything else in heaven located in relationship to it.”
3) A throne of unlimited grace
See Hebrews 4:14-16 14) Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens,Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin. 16) Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
►Mercy = God’s answer to our guilt; not giving us what we do deserve
►Grace = God’s answer to our needs; giving us what we don’t deserve
