Cycling

With Ragbrai just finishing up here, my thoughts are again on cycling. I know from chatting that there are at least a few people who enjoy biking so I thought I would create a thread to throw thoughts, favorite rides, equipment, whatever interests you.

Uh, I love biking. lol. What kind of biking do you do? I broke my wrist so I haven't been very active in the last several months, but I do really like both mountain and road biking.

I used to ride trails, but now with two little ones tagging along we're mostly on the road. We'll start doing some smoother singletrack later this year, I hope...
I run a Gary Fischer and my wife has a Schwinn, the kids have generics right now till they quit growing like weeds. I'd like to get into more distance riding, but I haven't bit the bullet and bought a descent road bike yet, too many other things have precedence right now.
Getting fat is a good reason to get back on a bike, I know from flabby exp.

My one advice: don't cycle in Sonoma County. 5 cycling deaths in the last 10 weeks. It seems there's a new article in the paper about a cyclist getting clipped by a car every week.

I stood a bike on it's front wheel to avoid being clipped by a car once, good way to get your heart rate up. :D

Want heart action? Drop a bike on a rain slick road in the middle of Washington D.C. traffic at dusk, been there, done that, don't like that.

Ouch, slick, busy roads are nasty. They can be fun too though. When I was little my cousin used to come up to my grandma's house for the summer, and when it would rain we would sneak out the door and go blasting through the rain, mud, and muck. We would come back covered from head to toe in mud with a skunk streak right up the middle of our backs, no fenders. Ahhh, good times.

I didn't catch where you live?

I have both mountain and road experience. I currently ride in New York, but have ridden in Northern California as well.

You guys are making me want to get my bike out of the shed...all except for the going on one wheel to avoid a car thing...I might just bring that rascal out of retirement.

Riding with kids is different from riding for exercise.

I think when you ride with your kids you have to make them the priority and not your work out.

IF you ride with your kids see it as time with them and invest in that relationship. If riding for exercise is important to you schedule it separately. Trying to do both will frustrate you.

Oh I do, exercise is at 5am with the wife, kids are in the evening after work. Both are good times though.
Abba, you should it's alot of fun, a weekend of camping, riding, and canoeing is coming up for us soon. How bout y'all?
