Flat screen vs. CRT

Hey guys,

Was wondering if you guys had any insight/opinions on Flat screen monitors vs. CRT monitors. My CRT monitor of 7 years is starting to go (it's darker than it should be, even w/ brightness/contrast jacked up, though gamma seems to help; and a little "line" has shown up, doing a slow endless crawl up my screen) and I was thinking about going with some kind of flat screen a) 'cuz I'm moving and they're lighter and b) they're pretty slick.

But upon further investigation, I hear that the refresh rates aren't as good (which I guess isn't very good for gaming) and they certainly don't look as "sharp" and crisp as CRT's do. Everything kinda look "fuzzy".

Opinions? I know LCD is more enviromentally friendly vs. CRT's, unless the newer CRT monitors have cleaned up their act.

If you go to alot of LANs and stuff, LCD is probably the way to go. Just don't get el cheapo off brand LCD that looks like crap. If you get a good one though, it'll probably be pretty expensive.

I got a brand new LCD about a year ago. Back then they all said CRTs were still the way to go, but nowadays its pretty much even. Also LCDs dont use as much power so you will save some $$ in tjhe long run on your power bill. If you do get a LCD, make sure it has a very low refreash rate - I think the newest ones go down as far as 4 millaseconds.

in my opinion I really like flat screen CRT monitors and the monitor that top gamers prefer the NEC monitor is still a crt flat screen :) but tru like para said the new LCD monitors are not as bad but it is all about finding a good one with the response time that HCS said for a good price

Well, I play on an LCD, but my surroundings can't allow for a flat-CRT. If I had the room, I would be using one :)

I lurve my 19" flat screen (NOT flat panel) CRT Samsung. I can't afford a 19" flat panel, but I likely would just buy a CRT and put the savings toward a fresh video card. Or just buy a 21" flat CRT monitor. ^^

I have an off-brand 17" flat screen CRT that I absolutely love. Bought it for 60 bucks at Walmart when my other monitor went out, and I bought it expecting to buy a better one when I had the money but never did. Anyway, I got home and turned it on, and I was just blown away with how good of a picture it had; it's extremely clear and is very colorful.

I'd rather have a box monitor for 60 bucks than a flat panel that costs hundreds more. If having a box monitor bothers you then you can just move your desk back away from the wall, because right now I don't think that LCD's are worth it.

K, I'm hearing a couple of different words being floated around here and I'm a little confused:

What is "flat panel" as opposed to "flat screen"? Flat screen's the thin one, is flat panel the one that removes the curves in the corners of the screen?

And I had no idea there were CRT "flat screens" - I though only LCD was capable of making screens that thin...or is this the confusion between flat screen and flat panel coming in here?

CRT monitors are starting to become instinct anyways. Retailers have more LCD monitors than CRT monitors, like do they with DVD's > VCR's.

Everyone has a agreeable figure to LCD monitors, might as well get it, besides, their cheap now, back then, LCD monitors cost the same as a computer(PC).

I would like to get a LCD monitor, so I wouldnt have to stare at my CRT monitor 2 feet from my seat(6-7 inches away).

flat screen is a crt that instead of using the glass in a curved shape it is flat. Flat panel is a LCD.
Ah ok thanks...ok, so I was talking about "Flat Panel" screens earlier 'cuz that's all I've ever seen are the LCD ones.

The CRT ones are the better ones, right? High refresh rates, crisp graphics, etc. right?

I like the CRT's... I've been using a Samsung 19" flat CRT and love it... If you are going to buy a LCD... check some reviews done by gamers.. LCD's can make some games look very bad.

If your going for an LCD I would suggest this one: Response rate is 16ms

I think so, yeah; especially if you take into account the price. But, even if you ignore the price, I think CRT's are clearer. The LCD's are a lot blurrier and turn out to be blueish in color. At least, the ones that I've seen are.

Like I said, back then, LCD monitors cost the same as a computer(PC).
