Out of context the meaning can be lost - but we are all reading through the whole Proverb.
We (the wise) are not the ones spreading the net - that is the wicked person that it talks about before and after. We are the birds. The idea is that - if we keep our eyes open and stay alert we will not be caught in the snares that are thrown out for us.
When I said, "lots of applications," I was referring to whatever temptations any one of us is facing. Most of us have many - what is it that draws anger, resentment, laziness, lust...whatever...keep an eye out to avoid that snare. If we stay alert we can protect ourselves from falling into that trap.
