Hello to all, i just want to let everyone know that iam still around i just usually play in the mornings because that is the best time to play because my lag isn't that bad. When i moved to arkansas a couple of months ago i couldn't get high speed internet where i moved to so i got broadband thru hughesnet satellite and it is ok unless you want to play wow then it really stinks, the satellites can't carry the vast amount of info needed to play wow so when i do get on my latency is usually around 900 sometimes it will drop to 850 but usually around 900 but if i get on like on a friday night it isn't nothing unusual to have my latency anywhere from 1,500 to 2000 and you can't do hardly anything with latency like that.I really miss running around with you all in them dungeons especially kara, i know iam missing alot of oppurtunities in getting armor and such but when it would take like 2mins per shot or spell which ever character i would be playing i would be a huge liability for the grp.So i just wanted to get on here and tell everyone why i haven't been on at nights very much and iam told that high speed internet is coming to my area at the beginning of next year,so come on 2008 and hurry and get here please!.Well if you are on in the am you will usually see me on doing some quest or maybe doing some farming, but i love to chat and meet new people or talk to my old friends in the guild, so talk with u all later. P.S. congrats to all of the teams who are doing really great in them really hard dungeons.

I'll add to that : Again

Satalite internet downlink is ok, its the uplink thats causing your lag. Because the satalite only sends information and your dish only receives it, you have to connect via dialup to send information back. Esentially you have a hybrid internet connection. Highspeed download, low speed uploads.

Yeah, Hughes had a much better satellite internet solution with Spaceway ... allowed much higher uplink speed (T1 plus) using a phased-array antenna with very sophisticated dynamic beamforming. It was like a giant router in the sky. However, after Rupert Murdoch/Fox bought Hughes, they decided there was not enough of a domestic market for ubiquitious internet so instead they launched the $1B satellites to provide DirecTV HD channels instead (internet, TV, it's all data...). It's kind of an engineering tragedy, like using a stealth bomber to deliver mail. Too bad there weren't enough Augustiouses around to make the business case work, sigh...

Actually it's typically not that way anymore. Typically DirecTV installs a new dish that adds capability of sending and receiving of signals. The latency results from the huge travel time, your house to the satellite in outer space. As Aug has noticed his latency is lower at specific times due to the position of the satellite's orbit around the earth. The old dialup is a thing of the past in most companies cases. The speed comes in bursts as satellite sends and receives larger packets due to the gap between the Aug's house and the satellite. Normal broadband sends smaller packets because it has a larger "tube" to travel down and shorter distance to travel.

Technically satellite is faster, with speeds possibilities around 100 mb a sec in chunks of packets but it's the latency that kills you.

They just need to upgrade their satellites with flux capacitors. Then the signal will actually reach the game server BEFORE it left Aug's machine!
