Is 18GB Ram, Overkill?

I just notice that my motherboard supports 6 x DDR3 ram slots and wanted to upgrade to 12GB ram.

I got suggestions that I can replace my old 2GB x 3 ram slots for 4GB x 3 ram slots.

I use 3 x 2GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator with a Gigabyte X58a-ud3r motherboard.

Interested in using either;
Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 XMP Triple Channel Core i7 Memory
OR
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Frostbyte PC3-12800 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Triple Channel Memory

$7 and brand difference.

I play games such as Max Payne 3 and use FRAPS for video recording.

Also, is it possible to use all the ram?
My 2GB x 3 + 4GB x 3? 18GB Ram total.

If you have the money, you can make use of it. Older games won't be affected at all, but some new games can suck up 4-6gb. Photoshop work will take all you can throw at it. Being able to have a ton of stuff open and running at once can be pretty convenient.

What Ewoks said.

18GB is a ton if you aren't running SQL server or something like that. 8GB is the sweet spot for me.

I'd recommend buying better (higher rated) RAM in quality vs a bunch of cheap RAM in quantity.

And now I feel poor.

Well, even more poor than I felt before.

/me goes back to a full-time job, student loans, and a mortgage

I haven't done the research, but it seems like the cost would outweigh the gain once you get past 8GB RAM for everyday work and even most gaming. I've never heard of a game that makes use of more than 8GB RAM, but I haven't exactly been surfing on the bleeding edge of tech since, well, ever.

Im gonna order the Corsair Vengeance when I get home.
Also, ordering a Wireless-N Dual Band router to support my Wireless-N dual band adapter because I'm very frustrated with the constant unidentified network happening when I'm
already online via the internet.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

The one to look out for there is the 16GB limit on Home Premium. If you're building a Core i7 system then it's quite easy (if you have the cash!) to exceed this limit. As long as you're aware of the limit and plan your OS accordingly you'll be OK.

Good point, Corpfox. I'm not sure if you are running 32-bit Windows, if not then disregard this, because it has a 4GB memory limit.

I went from 4g to 12g ram. Now I can easily run 7 Eve clients and still surf, paintshop, stream sports..... 18g might be overkill unless you are running some CAD programs

It really depends on if you are running a 32bit or 64bit system. 32bit windows systems limit the amount of ram to any individual running process to 2 gigs along with an upper addressable memory limit of 4 gigs. 64bit windows systems the process limit is 1 terabyte with a total addressable memory limit of 8 to 192 gigs depending on which version you have. For instance window home has a 8Gb limit where as pro has a 192Gb limit.

lol i have 16gb 4 4gb sticks and 8 core amd. only photoshop, video rendering, or virtual machines can utilize it all. also if you have a ssd drive you can decrease you pagefile size.

Ordered Corsair Vengeance 4GBx3 and Linksys Wireless-N Dual band router.

I hope it ships on Friday.

I use Win7 64-bit Home Premium, so I'll be maxed at 16GB.

I am disappointed on myself for not carefully checking everything.

I was excited when I got my new ram but when I opened my case for my motherboard, I was confused.

I have 4 x DDR3 ram slots. :(

I've replaced 6GB to 12GB.
I'll shall carefully check before buying.

Haven't replaced the router yet but I will tomorrow.

I spent 3 hours trying to set up the new router and it will NOT CONNECT!

When its connected from the Modem > Router > PC, keeps going off and on every few mins.

It says Connection disconnected, then connection limited, THEN connected but no internet.

There are no updates and it seems alot of ppl have the same issue.
It seems a router with Cisco ruins it altogether.

I've done CMD and it will run through the PC but still no internet.
I haven't done a tracert yet and will try that later.
I have tried most of the help from google, doesn't work.

IF it doesn't work by Monday, I'm gonna return this dumb router.

I bought a Linksys EA2700 Dual band router.
