I am guessing there is a max number of crafting materials that one can keep in their storage account. Is there any way to increase that amount?

Not that I know of. You can only keep a max of 250 of anything in a single slot. (Things that are stackable that is.)
If you really want to increase storage space, I suggest you create a character and give them a belt pouch and 2 expanded bags and use that character for nothing but storage.

Yes. 250 is max set by the game.
