The Bible pulls no punches! This verse is a corollary to "honor thy mother and father," showing the consequences of disobeying the clear command of Scripture.
This is grim but sound advice for a culture that fixates on the young and the restless and despises the aged. Show some respect to your elders and heed the words of those with more life experience (so long as their words line up with Scripture, of course) or else you might be blinded to wisdom.
