I have been young and now I am old,
yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned
or his children begging bread.
Psalm 37:25, HCSB

Perhaps even more crippling than the fear is the death of abandonment. Many of us have suffered being abandoned by a family member or friend; it can be crushing to reach a point where you believe God has abandoned you.

Our righteousness is not, nor has it ever been, earned by our actions or strength of will. While we are called to live holy and sanctified lives "set apart" for Christ, our performance does not earn us a guarantee against abandonment.

So let us draw near to Him, trusting He has not and will not abandon us. For some, it is a step long past. For others, it is a current and daily struggle to exercise such faith. Hold fast and persevere; cling to the unchanging Word when all else is changing.
