The Popes Opinion on Violence

The Pope spoke of the relationship between faith, reason and Islam's holy war, jihad. The Pope said violence is incompatible with the nature of God and with the nature of the soul.

I think the pope is confused. In the old testament God sanctioned a TON of wars. Sure, they were against evil-doers and the wicked, but they sure were violent.

Note: Edited for 'dope' because my playful rhyming was in bad taste. :(

incompatible with the nature of God and the soul???? WHAT IN HEAVENS NAME! didt he ever read "wild at heart" ?

riding in his glassed-in popemobile on his way to the canopied altar platform.

hehehe popemobile thats awesome

That article seems to be a summary of the Pope's address. Something like that can totally be taken out of context. I would not be so quick to judge someone of the Pope's Christian stature on a summary of one of his speeches. Give the man a little respect and hunt down his entire speech. I would venture to say that he's not on dope. ;)

:-(

Way to ruin the fun... astrod00d...

Just kidding. Here's the full address...

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI
Vatican City State, 00120
Italy

He can also be reached at his email... [ benedictxvi@vatican.va ]

Oh snap! You got pwned. Haha, I'm such a smarty pants.

:-P

"Historically, he said, spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable and therefore, ungodly. God is not pleased by blood, he said, and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature." Conversion at sword or gun point has never been the way of Christian missionaries, has it? I think the Pope was just calling Islam on something here and speaking out against religiously inspired violence.

We're living under the New Covenant, so the sorts of things God commanded in the OT don't apply to us so much. Besides, the commandment not to murder might not cover warfare, but those who profess to follow Christ should look first to His example in all things. How many people did Jesus kill or say should be killed? How about the apostles, who were closest to Jesus?

Paul was violently attacked most places he tried to spread the gospel, wasn't he? Wouldn't it have been reasonable for him to defend himself?

In the New Testament God killed Ananias and Saphira, who were introducing corruption into the church. They lied about how much they were giving to the church community and God killed them for it, but He didn't strike down any of the people who tried to kill his most faithful disciples. Why might that be?

No offense, but making fun of the Pope is awfully close to violating the TOS.

I take it the majority of you don't think too highly of the Pope?

I've never been pro-Pope, so I apologize if I jumped to conclusions :P

I'm not a catholic as you can tell by my avatar but I tend to agree with DV and to say the Pope is on dope is highly disrespectful to our fellow christian brother the Pope.

Well, I don't agree with a lot of the Catholic church or what the pope says. So... boo hoo for the pope. I'm sorry, but (at my grandparent's catholic church, I'm assuming it's the same elsewhere) it seems that some people view the Pope as second only to God or something. I saw a bunch of Christians saying stuff about the former pope like "God was with him so much more than most of us, it's amazing" or something. Well, duh. God's with EVERY Christian, and He doesn't play favorites with a guy in a pointy hat. The sheer amount of power some people seem to give the pope makes me want to puke.

Now, caustic as that sounds, I must make a note to the mods/admins that I don't intend any disrespect to the Catholic church or anything. I'm just saying what I think.

Who are you to question God and His choosen authority the Pope in that part of the body of Christ?

Who chose the pope? God, or a man? If you can pm me a video of God coming down from heaven and choosing a man...

That, and the pope saying "evolution is right" and all that. (Was that this current one or the former?) AND I don't agree with a lot of the Catholic church. They chose him. So I question them, not God.

The last time I checked, the Bible is full of examples of God showing favoritism.

Do you think Jesus' followers ever sat around talking about the apostles and their "pointy hats"?

Like it or not, the Bible has plenty of rules regarding heirarchy among followers.
