The State of Alt's

I now have 4 80's (thief,elementalist,guardian and mesmer)

here is my dilema;
i have the following toons to lv up and can't decide which one to start with;
Necromancer Lv40
Engineer Lv21
Ranger Lv20
Warrior Lv15

Necro...yer halfway there.

I am kind of there with you. The rest of my characters range between 2 and 20. In my case i am getting them all to 20 to decide what gets my attention to 80.

My engi just hit 45 last night - it is a BLAST when you find a build that works for you...until then, you will probably hate engi completely (!).

Hehe, "blast".

I'm facing the alt dilemma as well. Getting ready to push on my alts but I'm really not sure which I prefer. I have an 80 mesmer and just don't like them. So far I'm thinking I like thief, warrior, and elementalist which are 44, ~20, and ~37.

I think part of my issue is starting so heavily with a guardian. It's hard for me to appreciate how much the other classes are sometimes made of paper. Though I think that if I play with them more, it will help me be a better guardian as well.

Glad my humor is not lost on you, Ryan! Sometimes you have to tinker with your words to get them just right, especially when talking about engi's. I also completely understand your confusion about mesmer ;)

I was thankful that I started off playing a squishy class because it's much easier to be patient leveling other squishy alts. It still feels so strange on my guardian to just stand in front of things and beat them down with little concern for my health.

I've played my Ele for several months now, and feeling like it's time for a change. I'm slightly worried after it's insane mobility I'll have trouble with some of the other, slower professions, but I definitely need to shake things up.

I have an 80 mesmer that I abandoned not too long after getting her to 80. I have enough gold to get the rabid chest piece I couldn't afford at the time, but it will wipe out my savings. Not sure I want to sink all that money into her and still decide I want to level up something else.

I have a level 40 something Guardian, and it might be nice to play something a little tougher after playing two of the professions that have to dance all over the place to survive. I could craft level him almost to 80 and still have some gold left over to start buying exotics, but I'm thinking I might want to remake him entirely as a Charr. :P I also was frustrated by Guardian's range play when I went into WvW with him long ago, so do I really want to sink all that gold and still be frustrated by Guardian when it comes time to zerg in WvW?

Engineer seems to be hot after the recent update, and I have a great looking little Asura Engie I recently created. I also really want to have a character who wields the Spectral Wave Modulator some day, but will I ever see it since Engies spend so much time in kits?

I also came up with a Sylvari Thief look I really like just recently, and was insipired for a name while watching a Doctor Who episode last night. I know they got hit recently with a pretty significant balance pass, though. Might be good to wait a bit and let that settle in.

And then I come full circle back to Ele. They seem to be on top right now in PvP, so maybe I should jump in and just enjoy some sPvP until they bring the nerfhammer down on the D/D ele before leveling another character.

So many choices, so little play time. :D

What were you using for range? I normally roll staff + scepter/shield in WvW.

It was a long time ago, leveled two characters to 80 since, so I'm not 100% sure. I think I was probably using scepter and greatsword. Don't remember which off-hand I had pared with scepter at the time.

I remember watching little blue spheres slowly roll toward where my target had been standing what seemed like minutes ago. That'd be scepter, right? This would have been last fall, so I'm sure some things have changed. Not the least of which is that I'm hopefully a better player than I was then. :D I've since found that I really like several of the classes that frustrated me at launch.

I think you're thinking of orb of light, which is a staff skill. That particular projectile has been sped up. :) Maybe we can level our guardian/ele together and give each other tips!

Decided to go ahead and finish gearing up my Mesmer, which ate up all of my money, so the Guardian will have to wait a bit for his craft leveling. Khilbron's armor is crazy expensive, but I got the coat at a low point at least.

What someone needs to explain to me, is if ya cans gets perfectly good exotics using Karma, which is easily obtainable, why spend cash on armour?

Enok - why the Khilbron's if short on cash? Unless you're stuck on the name, there are alternate sets with the same look and stats available for much less.

As for why pay for armor...what else would you spend excess cash on? Once max stats are attained, the only thing to really spend money on are superficial things like weapons, dyes, and armor.

Only four of the six Precision/Toughness/Condition ("Rabid") light armors are available through Karma. I got those right away after hitting 80. The only other options for P/T/C armor are Khilbron's or dungeon armor, and I'm usually not on often enough to run that many dungeons with the guild (and hesitant to PUG dungeons).

At least that was the case a couple months ago when I last looked. It's possible they've introduced Rabid armor that can be sold on the TP since then.... didn't think to look. 8O

Now I can understand the new Molten Picks. Let's say for the average person the game has a life of 3-4 years, how many Oricachalcum picks will you use up in that time? Or even lesser picks? And you don't have to remember to swap out picks every time you go into a higher area. Just the cost of gems for that is kinda insane right now.

I don't understand the picks. That's 50,000 uses! I can't imagine mining that much.

I don't bother changing out my picks in lower level areas. At 8 copper for a copper ingot, I'm making 6 copper per ingot selling them on the TP. A swing of an Orichalcum Mining Pick is 4 copper, so I'm not losing money, and the only reason I mine copper is to get the daily if I'm in a low level zone.

If I switched out for a copper mining pick, that'd be .24 coppers/use, so it's the difference between getting 2 copper/ingot or 4.76 copper. Not worth the hassle, and definitely not worth 800 gems.

Add to that the fact that in 3-4 years you're probably not playing the same character the whole time, and the molten picks are soulbound, so you'll need one for each toon you play for any significant length of time.

Even on one character, with a molten pick costing about 500 ori picks, you'd have to go through over 3 picks a week for three years before you just break even.

Changing picks? Ha! Just buy some karma ones from the level 51 heart in Bloodtide coast on "spend some karma daily" day. :)

Went ahead and spent it because A.) I never pass a node B.) I plan on playing GW2 until they shutdown the servers (much longer than 4 years) C.) a temp drop in gem prices today D.) I can clear some extra slots in bags by not carrying extra picks E.) If I don't play Christeen often enough she will beat me up, so she will always get extra play time.

Obtaining more than one for other toons just plain doesn't make sense though.

Is now a bad time to point out that you can spend half as much and get an entire extra bag? :D

Seriously, though, I understand. Sometimes it's nice not to hassle with some of those things. I spent 800 gems just to change a character's name, which could be seen as crazy. But it was worth it to me.

I will always smile fondly, however, when I remember logging on with her during some guild stuff.

Me: "I still need a group."
Someone: "Who are you?"
Me: Raven.
Raven: What? I'm Raven!
Me: No, character name, "Raven". Not THE Raven. Just A Raven, with the funky spelling.

What's funny is how THE Raven isn't even Raven anymore, but she's still THE Raven among Ravens.

It definitely seems like I am more consistently getting a little extra about half the time with the pick. And not nervously checking my pick count every time I am in LA. And I will never get to nowhere Orr and find out that I have no pick with me that can do the job.
