The Ultimate PC

Bowser

Tribe of Judah StarCraft Series Chapter Leader
I've been building a PC for ToJ's use. I'm not paying for it.. I'm just picking out the parts for the ultimate machine. Think of it as the mascot (of machines) for ToJ. Or something like that.

And, actually it's not "ultimate", but it's pretty good. I purposefully chose to downgrade some hardware because I was looking for the most compatible. For example, the Intel i7 motherboards are pretty terrible, so instead of going with an i7 1366, which is arguably the fastest processor, I instead went with the 1156 model. I did this because I found better support with the 1156 motherboards. In theory, the system is less likely to crash or have any errors, and should also run at higher overall capacity, because there won't be any bottlenecking.

For a measly $1719.92 this build could be ToJ's best investment!

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Steel ATX$99.99

Power: Rosewill BRONZE 1000W$149.99

Motherboard: ASUS Intel LGA 1156 P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0$279.99

Processor: Intel Core i7-860 2.8GHz 1156 95W Quad 8MB Cache$279.99

Memory: G.SKILL 6GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600$164.99

Video: MSI GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16$399.99

Hard Drive: Fujitsu 300GB 15000 RPM SCSI Ultra320 68pin$309.99

Cooler: Dynatron K650 60mm$34.99

Oh, and P.S. How does a 68pin HD connect to a SATA mobo?

It won't because it's SCSI. You'll need a card for it to connect. Just get a normal SATA 6GB/s HD - it'll be much cheaper.

Question - why are you building ToJ a computer? (I'm just curious. :D)

Also, in lieu of the motherboard you've chosen, may I suggest a Gigabyte motherboard? They are famous for their high durability and resilience (i.e. all of their motherboards come with two bios chips so should something crazy happen, you still have a functioning motherboard).

For the case, should have a SC logo on one side, and TF2 on the other as that's what we're most interested in. :p

The 6GB's aren't that good right now, and also I'm trying to avoid Seagate and Western Digital. I've heard some really good things about Fujitsu, so I want to go with them, especially since their HD's are crazy(!!) fast.

I was just wondering how much a sweet computer would cost. I was recently reflecting on how much it cost to build my machine. I have a pretty good build, but most of the hardware is 2-3 years old (albeit still very good).

I'm glad you brought this up.. I really love Gigabyte mobos. They have such a good design and are very efficient. I chose the ASUS tho because it has more RAM slots, and I tried to avoid a microATX board. I couldn't find a good 1156 Gigabyte that fit the requirements. Mostly, I don't want a microATX for a gaming computer for heat and venting issues.

Well, a OC 260 is pretty much the same as a 275 isn't it? And all the stats are the same.

The 260 is still a very good card, tho not quite as high end, so $150 or more cheaper than the 285.

Yours is the 1366 model :(

edit: wait, you actually own an i7? Whoa! that's awesome! How do you like it?

That Fujitsu drive is only as fast as it is because it is SCSI, which is not the same as SATA or PATA. There is no where on that motherboard to plug in that drive. Samsung makes great SATA drives and I am sure Fujitsu makes SATA drives as well. SCSI will not work.

This is the same price as your Asus you picked out.

Huh, I think you need to research the parts, Bowser.

Core i7-860 2 x DDR3-1333 LGA 1156

Compatible with Intel Core i7 series CPU for Intel X58 Motherboard

LGA 1156 are NOT X58 Motherboards.

I like it, but I need more HDD and Windows 7. I'd like to try out DX10.

Nice find!

#1 I'm pretty sure that's an additional feature for the RAM, not a requirement.
#2 You edited it out, but you said the i7 requires Triple Channel RAM, which is not true, just that it supports triple channel.
#3 You do bring a good point tho with the mobo.. my RAM is 3 channel and the mobo is only 2.. so on to find one that supports 3!!

So if members were to invest the funds to build this "mascot" machine, it would logically follow that it would be placed in the guardianship of the President, yes?

:D

I didn't read through all the specs, but I imagine you could get a very beefy computer these days for under $1800. I'm still coasting by with my Dell Studio 1737 with a Intel Core2Duo 2.0GHz processor, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, 2GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a 160GB 5400RPM drive. If it runs StarCraft II well (and, based on articles I've read, it should), I'm good to go for another year or two at the least.

But some day, I'd love to build a comparable (read: high-end) machine like this. Using my own money, of course.

I would just like to throw in that you can easily get the same performance (same as in close enough so that you will not notice a difference) out of an AMD-powered gaming machine as you can with an Intel-powered gaming machine.

I have done various Google searches for comparisons between the Intel processor you selected and the AMD Phenom 2 X4 965 (could they have made it longer???). I couldn't find many , but most of what I read (which consisted of comparisons between i5 750 and i7 850) stated that differences between the two processors as far as gaming is concerned are not noticable.

Also... the price of the Phenom 2 is much cheaper and parts for AMD's are cheaper in comparison to Intel parts.

Edit: The new price for your HD is not $309.99 :)

Just give you a rough detail of my X58 PC.

CPU

MOBO

PSU

RAM

Video Card

Note: I brought most of those a year ago.

That is a really sweet set up. When I was building my computer back in February '09 I wanted to go for a similar system and looked heavily into the ex58 mobo. But.. all the components are a little too expensive for me ;)
