What is god?

I don't want to qualify the question any further, so as to keep it open ended. What, in your opinion, is god?

Usually I'd try and answer this from a Christian perspective, but I will give you my personal perspective this time.

Gods are answers to questions that Man has no answers for. Man didn't know what created lightning or thunder so they created a god to explain it. Love was mysterious so a god was created to represent it. Fire, the sun, every thing that Man couldn't explain was attributed to a god. Gods were created to answer the biggest question of all...what happens to us when we die? Man created gods to give men hope and direction.

The Christian god is yet another example of this.

I know it may come as a shock to you, but I have plenty more to say on this topic. They are more about the character of God though. I'd rather not muddle your thread.

If no one responds though, I may start rambling

I am going to answer this question from my personal perspective which just happens to be a Christian perspective.

First, God is not a thing. God is not a person either. Humans were modeled after God, therefore God is a living being, yet he is not a HUMAN being.

So now we have "Who is God?"

God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end. God IS, WAS, and IS TO COME. God cannot be explained, but it does not mean humans created him. God created humans.

God is my creator, my Father, my guardian, and my BEST friend. God is my councelor, my shoulder to cry on, and my healer.

God IS.

I phrased the question with a 'what' instead of a 'who' for a reason. For, while 'he' has be characterized in dozens of different ways, the nature of god is still highly nebulous. God is not a person, god is not a man, god just IS. The image of god, with the white beard and such, originally came from the Greeks' Zues.

But my question remains, what is god? The answer that must be given, I suppose, is 'I don't know.' But consider the following possibility. Could it be that, while god has been formed into a being with human-like properties over our history, is it not concievable that god is merely the chance circumstance that may or may not have resulted in our 'creation' and has governs the nature of matter, the environment, space, etc. The wonders of science if you will. Could god be that?

No offense, but how does that explain what God is? You just said He can't be explained. If He can't be explained, can He be described?

That's not even close enough for horseshoes or hand grenades.

Your explanation of God is that He can't be explained.

That is NOT an explanation.

Yes, I heard you the first time.

If it's good enough for you, so be it.

For the majority of rational beings, it's nowhere near good enough.

Well im sorry to tell you, but your brain is too small and you wont live long enough to ever begin to comprehend it... So this is as close as anyone can get in this life.

And how can you speak for the majority of rational beings? Are you considering the angels? How about God himself? OR are you just considering yourself as the rational being?

Quote[/b] ]The Chalcedonian Creed
(A.D. 451)

We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man, of a reasonable soul and body; consubstantial with the Father according to the Godhead, and consubstantial with us according to the Manhood; in all things like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation, born of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, according to the Manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person and one Subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the prophets from the beginning have declared concerning him, and the Lord Jesus Christ himself has taught us, and the Creed of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.

EDIT Forgot the Bible verses
Matthew 3:16 - 17

And you know that at the ripe old age of 17 ey. Methinks you assume to know too much. Maaaybe you would be better equiped to understand things if you open your gates a tad?

Someone address this question please.

So your suggesting that with a limited brain capacity and very limited time you could possibly understand an infinite being...?

My Gates are fine with God guarding them.
