Where the heck is the drilling noise coming from!?

In the beginning, the darn noise would happen occasionally when I turn on my PC. Naturally, I'd smack it on the back of the PC and the noise is gone.

Now its driving to the point I want to destroy the darn drilling noise is so darn annoying! :laughs evil:

I check everything, EVERYTHING!

Side Fan: No
Front Fan: No
Back Fan: Possible
CPU Fan: No
PSU Fan: ?
Video Card fan: No

When it occurs, a few things happen:

1. Doesn't load my OS, gives the error about if I had a boot disk. (or something related)

2. Performance dramatically goes down, shutters every 5-10 secs, then either works or crashes PC. (My LCD timer shows it runs, stops and runs; continuous loop)

3. Just crashes PC.

Its very darn-ish, darn annoying, especially to keep Italic the words, darn. >;-\

The only thing I can come up with is, something in my PC is very loose that creates a drilling noise.

My motherboard isn't properly stable since there were some gold plated nuts that were left when I built the PC.

check the northbridge fan if you have one, their bearings tend to go out and they make a really really really annoying noise.

The noise is all in your head!

Actually, I'm out of ideas - you checked everything I would have known to check. Actually, since it leads to immediate system instability...any chances it's your HDD? When I had fans going out, my system wouldn't shut down until it overheated.

sounds to me like it could be your HDD, I have seen the little "arms" that read the platters fail (although it has been a long time), when they do, they can rub on the platter and it would sound like you are putting a fork against a spinning metal plate... since the data is magnetic it may still read for a while but eventually it will die.

Although I do believe in the big hammer theory of repair beating on your computer can cause, uhm... well... hard drive errors :(

actually, you're in the dentists chair, knocked out by the funny gas, and the drilling that you're hearing is them drilling away on your teeth...

it definitely sounds like your hard drive if none of the fans are making the noise. I would back stuff up immediately... 8)

actually dude ima say its your PSU, i had one do the exact same thing. lived with it for bout a year and i think it burned out my socket a cpu.

Where is the "Northbridge" fan located?

I have never heard of that before.

My HDD is in the front of the case along with my DVD-RW.

The noise ends when I smack it at the back of the case.

At the back of the case are the Back Fan (120mm), the PSU (600Watt; couple months old), the connectors from the motherboard (mouse, keyboard, lan, usb, etc.)

If it helps, when the "drilling" noise occurs, just pushing the back cover reduces the noise but not completely.

I've had the annoying noise since I brought the PC. So, it can't be the PSU. It was replaced cause my "generic" PSU couldn't handle the PCI-E Video Card I had newly installed.

Did you check the flux capacitor, Corp?

I was thinking what that was until I wikipedia it.

But if that is a your serious question, then I don't think I have to worry about that.

When I feel like it, I'll check my computer, internally. Dismantling each part to see if it is loose, broken or something worse. :\

Wow, looking back at all my threads of problems with the new PC, its ridiculous.
And from the dates, I've had it for almost 2 years.

Ya, computers have one of the worst maintenance cycles. Either you are cleaning up junk, reinstalling broken stuff or replacing broke hardware. I really need to get a can of air and do some dusting on my desktop, I think some dust bunnies have decided to move in.
