Quick Fedora Question...

Helped Tek test a thing
I've just done my near bi-annual Linux distro switch on my laptop to Fedora 8. (Its because I often get bored with a distro and want to try something new. Its like I have ADD when it comes to Operating Systems and nearly all Linux distributions being free does not help any)

I borrowed the DVD from a friend, and installed it all nicely, had a slight hitch updating (nothing serious, but I would swear he gave me a disk from the initial release there were so many updates...) but that was easily fixed.

The question is: I want to download and install some programs (VLC and Compiz-Fusion) but it wants packages from the install disk -which I unfortunately no longer have. Is there a repository available where all the packages on the install disk can be located?

It should go stand alone when it gets installed. Use the yum command if you are using the GUI, the GUI works sometimes, but I find it a little slow.

hmm. Interesting... Tried installing from the command line and it doesn't ask for the disk.

Must be something messed up with the GUI way of doing things somewhere

Oh well, can't always be perfect I guess.

When I installed Fedora 8, it came with Compiz-Fusion on the initial install... Do you have a DVD burner and an image writer program (you can find free somewhere), if so, DL it and image burn it, and reinstall it...

If your going to use a gui use yum extended (yumex), it has a better gui anyway IMO.

I would wear a fedora hat if I had one.

Anyway, I'm currently installing Guild Wars on it (via wine) to see if I can. If so, I could be able to uninstall it on the XP partition, which would free up enough space (hopefully) for me to install some of the Microsoft-only developer stuff that I need for school...

Any surprises I should be expecting on the GW install?
