A tip on true listening, it is not just hearing and responding.
The best way to listen, is to hear them speak, think of what you are understanding them to be saying, then ask them if what you think, ie "From what I hear you saying, you are..... is this what you are saying?"
It takes practice, but you will find it amazingly effective at making others feel heard and understood.
