I still won't be subbing, but if they ever decide to move to buy-to-play, I'll certainly be picking it up. I like it a lot, but I have no interest in shelling out monthly expense on a single game.
Everyone thought that the F2P/B2P movement would eventually be the standard for MMO game; however, most games that are F2P or have gone F2P have had to cut jobs and slow down development. I used to fully support F2P because of cost, but then I see how harder it is for a game to constantly maintain and advance a living world without a large monthly influx of money. Games that support a sub and actually are able to hold it, usually offer more content and don't have to cut jobs. Living worlds cost more manpower/time/work to maintain than your $60 blockbuster hit. To expect to pay $60 for a game that is in constant development is not practical... It would be nice if game development didn't cost money, but those are people, with jobs, so again, it's just not practical... Another point, most $60 games give you what, 20-30 hours of gameplay/fun at most? While a game like FFXIV will give you 500+ hours of gameplay/fun easy...
One good example right now is Guild Wars 2 (Anet). They are really starting to struggle to produce good quality monthly content due to funding and manpower. This is because they promised a top quality AAA MMO for F2P...which over time, isn't possible... The best experiment for it was GW2, and with some of their latest monthly content updates, it showing itself incapable...
Another example is Trion Worlds. A month before their slightly popular MMO Rift went free to play,
they laid off 80% of the company...
I could keep going, but I'm really just ranting.........
Now, personally I don't want to pay $15/month to play a game, but I will for this one. It deserves it. The game will be worth it, and I will feel like I'm helping a struggling company out...
Whew...that was a lot more than I intended to write...
EDIT: After doing some math, let's look at this logically. $15/month = $180/year. That's the equivalent to 3 games. I play an MMO on average 500 hours a year. So that's 60-90 hours of fun, versus 500 hours of fun.
