Halflife mplayer problems

I'm having lots of problems trying to get half-life (all different mods) to work on my new machine. First of all, when I try to connect to a server (via gamespy or all seeing eye), it launches the game to the console and then just sits there with a blank console. Then when I try to manually connect I get this message;

NET_SendPacket ERROR: WSAEINTR

It did this before I realized I had a firewall active. When I deactivated it, it worked for a while but then started giving me problems again (with natural selection).

Anybody of you 1337 half-life gamers know what might be wrong?

dunno, I made a new connection with the firewall turned off (yes winXP), and it still did it. I'm gonna try a different modem and see if that doesn't do it, the one I used was laggy.
