Introduction to me!

Hi everyone!

Just introducing myself (belatedly).

I was introduced to this forum by a friend who was laughing at you guys (he's a non-Christian). So, I was like... Cool!

I am a Christian, and a liberal one, at that. That doesn't mean that I will skew what the Bible says, nor will I bend rules if they exist. I have been a Christian for 6 years, and counting (hopefully the number will be infinite).

I am also a gamer (my gaming appetite has been lost over the years). I play Warcraft, C&C, CS, and others. However, I've lost interest (some) in them, so bleh.

I like reading novels, and I read a variety of them, on many genres. I lean towards sci-fi and fantasy, in true geek fashion. Favourite authors include JRR Tolkien, Robert Jordan, CS Lewis, OS Card, Robert Sawyer, and more.

I have been tinkering with computers for the past ... 10 years. I am fairly experienced in DOS, Win9x, NT, and snippets of MacOS, to the point of at least being able to use them without having too many problems. As for forum experience, I have joined a number of them n the past 1.5 years, and know all the basic forms of etiquette. Arstechnica is my main one, and I'm a mod of another one.

Heyyo, I think you posted already without intro-ing yourself, which is against the First Commandment of CGA. That means, umm, you walk for two miles with fifty ten-pound stones on your head.
Only joking!
I like Robert J. (though I've only read about 100 pages of Eye of the World, the first one, and it hooked me. Such a great book! I wonder what hapepned of the Dragonmount and who is that shadowy figure pursuing Rand?) and Tolkien and CS Lewis. Haven't heard of the others. You ever read David Eddings or Anne McCaffrey's works? Excellent stuff there. John Steinbeck is another great author, especially Of Mice and Men. George Orwell another good one (both were Socialists) HG Wells for sci-fi, Isaac Asimov is good, and Aldous Huxley's classic Brave New World is a must.
James Byron Huggins has some excellent modern sci-fi, being an ex-military, police and I know not what else. Scientist at one point I think.

Oi, I'm SLAM. pieman3141? AOL user? Hmm...

Anyway, I used to be into C&C a lot, but I mostly play FPSs these days. I programing Visual Basic, QBasic, RapidQ, I've got a basic knowledge of C, and I'm learning assembly language. I also know HTML, if you call that a programming language, and I've got four sites running right now, with a new layout for one, and one completely new website on the way. I'm active here, and at a bunch of other forums and online communities. Anyway, welcome :).

Hi I'm Justice, I'm a forum nazi. I will remove your posting rights if I don't like your post. lol!

But on a more serious note, I am a hardcore gamer. Flip burgers by day, conquer by night. I share much with the rest of you, working on computers and all. I'm almost done with an associates degree in networking, and may get a BS in network security.

OS Card = Ender's game right? Never heard of it.

More stuff:

How the heck did I forget Orwell, McCaffrey, and Huxley? ARGH! *smacks his head*

No, I am not an AOL user, and never will be. ME?? This hardcore computer guy using AOL??? I LAUGH (hoo hoo). Pieman3141 is a joke on my name (Pi = my last name, so people made "fun" of me. I thought it was amusing).

*feels stupid and embarassed for not catching "3.141."

Gah, please accept my deepest apologies over the recent insult. I never meant to imply that a hardcore techie could be a, AOL user. Unless of course you were.

Ok, I'm really new (1st post), but I'll go introduce myself in a minute. I wanted to reply to this first.

I'm also an avid sci-fi / fantasy reader. But I have to wonder . . . if you people are such fans of R.J. and are such avid gamers - then why aren't you playing the Wheel of Time FPS PC game? It came out in late '99 and was a really excellent game. Just curious since as vocal as I have been about my Christianity among that crowd, I'm pretty familiar with the (very small contingent of) Christian gamers there.

Anyway . . . I'll go make that intro post now.

Oh and smile, Jesus loves you ;)

Welcome :). I've actually never read any of that series, but I've heard it's good. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to picking it up.

welcome to both of you new people I'm kidan, I teach God's word and for a living I am a software engineer.

I can program in VB, C/C++, COBOL, Java, PERL, Eiffel, Python, and Assembly (ugh )

I can do web development using HTML, ASP.Net, classic asp, php, flash, and am learning ColdFusion

At work we run MS SQL servers, MS Access, and Oracle for my personal website I use MySQL (i like the free stuff) an that can be seen here.

don't feel owned Slam, i liked your website alot

besides, programming is what I do, I couldn't do anything on one of those Coast Gaurd Cutters

on top of that I haven't had my job long an still quite happy with it and love telling people that "I'm a software engineer"
biggrin.gif

Hey Kidan, I didn't know you were a software engineer. That's what I do. Actually, I tend to tell people I'm either a software developer or "I write software programs". I don't think most people know what a software engineer really does.

That's cool. Welcome to the world of software development.

And welcome pieman. Glad to have you on board.

I can program C/C++, JavaScript, Perl, and VB.

But I am the enemy. I am the bane of software engineers everywhere. I don't really know how to do anything, I only know how to do it better. Process.

Despair all ye programmers and software engineers that cross my path. Ye all shall be but chaff before my whirling blades of regulatory requirements and reams of paperwork.

Cringe and weep, for I am Software Quality Assurance!

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yes, I'm still pondering whether or not I'm going to get into the software business...I've been tihnking about it, but I'm not sure I want to go to school...

What's that? QA?!? AAAAAH!!!

*codes up a quick endless loop program, glowing with a brilliant blue light between his hands.

SUPEEEEEER MEGAAAAAAAAA BLAAAAAAAAAAST!

*screams Dragon Ball Z-style for 23 minutes (roughly the length of one episode), before hurling the powerful blast of code at Tromos.

No, I am NOT a DBZ fan. I just like making fun of the screaming :).

*deflects the heaving, glowing mass of spaghetti code with a condescending slap from his U.S. Government Software Regulations binder*

Kneel knave before the might of my tree-ware!

*whistles in the dump truck which promptly drops 3 tons of paperwork on SLAM's head*

Now fill those all out - in triplicate - and submit your requirements for review. I don't want to see another line of code until you have fully prepared, reviewed, and approved requirements, a Data Flow Diagram with a minimum of 8 levels, an Entity-Relationship diagram for your entire system, UML diagrams for all user-level functionality, object model diagrams, state charts, and a minimum 20,000-word treatise on the benefits of your software code to all of humankind (with a cost-benefit analysis and software worth depreciation breakdown for the next 10 years).

What are you waiting for? Move! We need this by the end of next week!

Good QA shouldn't be your enemy. I currently work with one of the best QA'ers I have ever worked with. I think both of our managers are very impressed with the working relationship we have demonstrated.

Yup, I have a degree in Comp Info Systems

The company I work for does a lot of web applications so that's what I've been building mainly.

/me dumps a CMMI Level 1 certificate on Tromos

Take THAT!

I have to say, I really respect you Software Engineers. Two years into my CIS degree, I decided I never wanted program as a full-time job. It was just too hardcore for me. I am a simple man who loves to interact with people. What scared me the most was when I was told that programmers just sit a cubicle somewhere coding 40 hours a week. If that is true, I just cannot do it, but that is just me. I am weak and have to be around people.

I have to be around people too. That's why I prefer cubes over individual offices. I get much more done in a cube environment. Yes, most of my day I'm huddled in front of a computer, but there is plenty of interaction as well.

Oh. I program in C/C++ and hopefully C# sometime soon. I've also had several years of Java, but unfortunately, the place I work for does not use Java.

We are Windows OS only, so we stick with Microsoft languages. I was using Java at a company where our product ran on Windows, HP-Unix, and Sun-Unix, and I think one more.
