Have you watched SG-1? I think it can stand alone okay, but there are some things that would definitely make more sense if you've seen SG-1. This season has by far been the weakest, but I think it's a pretty decent show overall. I'm not sure we'd watch it as diligently as we do if we weren't such SG-1 fans from the beginning.

It's decent. But yes, you really should see SG-1 if you haven't already. It's a much better show and explains a lot of what will be happening later in Atlantis.
The whole franchise is great because although all the episodes are stand-alone, there is definitely a big storyline progression as well. Each episode builds on the last, but they also keep it simple for those that are new or watching for the first time.
