The Great Crate Bonfire

...What? Why would you do that? :/
An AO rating would effectively block Valve from selling Team Fortress 2 in retail establishments. They would be presented with a choice: Remove the gambling element from the game or stop selling TF2 in stores.

There's precedent for a game being reevaluated by the ESRB based on new access to previously unavailable content: The GTA "hot coffee" controversy. Rockstar removed the "hot coffee" minigame and re-issued the game with a M rating.

There's also precedent for a game to receive an AO rating based solely on its inclusion of real gambling: Peak Entertainment Casinos.

I sincerely doubt the ESRB will reply with anything but a stock response, but I thought it would be interesting if they took another look at the game.

Thought this was a protest, not a hyper protest. -.-
/shrug

The ESRB e-mail is a separate thing. I doubt they'll send anything but a form response. I just thought I'd indulge my curiosity.

So no input on the video description?

1. I'd have a line at the bottom the donor's listing saying something like "and thanks to the many others who donated via Bird of Pray." Too many people donated to list or keep track of but a general ty would probably be good to cover all bases.

2. I wonder if Corps wants a link to his forum post or not. It's good to have but it's up to him.

3. If Corps doesn't mind his you tube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDzIwuZkYtg&feature=related of opening a bunch of crates and getting no unusual hat is as compelling as his statement of money spent. In the words of one of the comments on it "it's like an anti-gambling video". May want to include a link to that in addition to how much he's spent overall.

4. I don't think the links to the backpack are necessary since we will see you destroying the crates in the video. Backpack could be faked while the video of the actual destruction, reasonably, could not.

Added to draft:
Thanks also go out to everyone who donated crates via Bird of PrAy. Your support was essential to this project.

If Corp wants me to pull the link, I will. It's his call.

I'll consider it. My concern is that YouTube users will click from video to video (using the Related Videos feature) and find a "crate unlocking" video where someone does get an unusual hat.

I'd rather people take at least one action suggested in the video description and I know from personal experience how fragile one's attention span can be while watching YouTube videos.

Some could claim that I destroyed the crates in TF2 beta rather than TF2 proper. The links provide additional proof that the video is not altered, though I doubt anyone would make such a claim.

I don't really understand but ok. Of course people can win the point is showing people can and do lose BIG time. People shouldn't be fooled by thinking it's just micro transactions or a kids game the stakes aren't small amounts of money. Regardless the videos are not important to clearly showing the crate destruction that's the main thing anything else is a side thought and may be distracting like you said.

Ah ok I didn't know the beta worked differently regarding item destruction I've never tried it.

Nor have I. :)

I included the "before" and "after" links for two reasons:
  • To include additional proof (not that I needed any additional proof) that I REALLY did delete 300 crates.
  • To provide an example of the "before" and "after" links I ask users to post.
Although, come to think of it, I was planning on disabling comments on the video since I don't want to deal with moderating countless "UMADBRO?" YouTube posts.

I wasn't concerned with people doubting whether you actually destroyed the crates but people doubting whether Bird of Pray did. They've been wanting to see the video.

I probably would have said at least "I know someone who has spent $2000 on keys (and has gotten no unusual). Gambling hurts people!" but it's good as it is. I also would have gotten Elihu to sing "all the crates are burning" while the video played but that's just me :p .

Anyway looks great Tek thanks a lot for taking a stand for the people! :D

Tek, I believe we REALLY need to enable the comments. Give me a quick rundown on what needs to be done and I will watch it like a hawk...or a Bird Of PrAy. :) I did not know the comments were disabled and I have been telling people to look at the video and voice their opinion. We may get good and bad, but I bet the good will be far more than the bad. I just chat about it in the trade servers and people want to know how they can support us. They want to give their name and give crates. I have been telling them to wait on donating more crates to see how this goes. I believe the key to getting Valves attention is to show there are a lot of people supporting your idea. Again, I will personally monitor the comments and do whatever is needed to watch the link. I do not know if I can edit comments or what you think should be done, but show me how and I will take care of it. The vast majority of people I speak to want to know how they can support the ideas you voice. Let's not miss this opportunity. Please contace me ASAP at work out details. Thanks and God bless Bird Of PrAy.

I disabled comments for the video because moderating comments requires time and I'm already stretched thin between managing the Christian Gamers Alliance, managing Tribe of Judah, looking for a job, and preparing for my and my wife's first child to arrive in mid- to late February.

Unfortunately, YouTube does not allow users to share moderation duties on a video.

Besides, I think Valve is much more likely to pay attention to a popular Steam Forums thread (or a batch of e-mails) than comments on a YouTube video.

I have added a link to the relevant Steam Forums thread at the beginning of the video description. I want to make it as easy as possible for TF2 players to show their support for the project and I agree that many more people would react positively than would react negatively, but I can't afford the time to moderate the volume of comments this video is likely to generate.

Huzzah! Darkomni posted a link to this YouTube video supporting the Great Crate Bonfire on the Steam forums. The video shows 500 crates being deleted.

I laugh at a paltry 500 crates! Bird of Pray is about to approch a crate destruction level that will shake the foundations of the world asunder!

...but seriously it's great another person has added to the bonfire :)
