ToJ UT2004 server rules

Tek7 (Legacy)

CGA & ToJ President
Greetings, all. I'd like to open the floor to anyone who wishes to make suggestions for a ruleset for the Tribe of Judah: Unreal Tournament 2004 server.

Aaand...GO!

Ya i think most of the CS rules will apply here with a few extras for UT style gameplay....no map exploits, no tank llamaing etc...

No worries, Peon, I have no idea what Rizz is talking about either. :p

Some quick rules, having not seen the CS rule book:

- 3 strikes yer out: for any violation of a rule, you get 3 warnings. On the third and final warning, the player will be booted.
- Only server Admins (I don't have a list handy right now, I'll put it in later) are allowed to enforce the rules and give warnings
- Obviously no swearing and no rude, hateful or dirty screen names. Trash talk is allowed and players (esp. non-christian ones) may get carried away with their comments. This doesn't necessarily mean that there has been a violation if you think the player made an honest mistake and has been trying to be respectful of the server rules. As an Admin, use your judgement.
- If you're a clan member and somebody is violating rules, hop out and see if you can contact an Admin (if they aren't on the server already) to get them in and rectify the situation. Instant messeging is best as an e-mail may never be received in time. However, it would be good to have a report on a particular player, even if an Admin wasn't there, so that tabs can be kept

That's all I got for the moment...

I think some bad names that people choose should also be a factor. Where our server is listed as a christian server then other people who have very little respect for God may choose a player name very offensive to a christian just for spite.

tank laming... you just sit in a tank in a cornered spot and blow up anyone who goes near a powernode... even if its not a crucial one...

map exploits.. i have seen people go up the sides of the cliff on one map in a manta.. then they can shoot at the powercore without being shot at..

i don't think trash talk should be allowed.

its hateful, hurtful and as Christians we should neither participate in nor condone it.

here's the rules that I suggest

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">1.) Obey the server admins. Please do not argue with them. If you feel they are being unreasonable, email <chapter leader email> and give specific incidences.  As well, let the admins do their job.  If there's an admin on, they will deal with rule breakers.
2.) Obscene names, language and pornographic sprays are not tolerated on this server.
3.) Cheating is not allowed on this server. If suspected of, or caught using them, YOU WILL BE BANNED IMMEDIATELY.*
4.) No belittling others skill. Trash talking and accusations do not promote teamwork and gameplay.
5.) No recruiting on our servers. We're here to play, not get hit on!

*The admins will take full advantage of their powers if they feel any of you are breaking any of these rules. Contact <Chapter Leader Email>, <Co-Leader Email>, or rizz@toj.cc if you feel you were banned unfairly or dealt with inappropriately. We'll deal with it on a case-by-case basis. The reason for immediate ban of using hacks, or even being suspected of using them is simply to keep our environment clean and to promote smooth gameplay for all. [/QUOTE]

I suggest:

1. No swearing, vulgarities, sexually explicit or sexually suggestive speech, racial epithets or slurs, trash-talking, or insults. Not in the text chat, not in the voice chat, and not in your name.
2. No being disrespectful to other players in any way, including one's style of gameplay.
3. The word of the administrators is always right.
4. All players shall receive two warnings about any infractions before being given the virtual boot. The two warnings may apply to different infractions with no change to penalty.
5. No intentionally exploiting bugs. No cheating, no hacks.
6. No chat spamming, text or otherwise.
7. If you see that the teams are uneven, and you are on the team with more players, it is your responsibility to switch regardless of circumstances.
8. If you are spectating, and the server becomes full, please either switch to active play, or leave the server to make room for another who wishes to play.
9. If you are away from the keyboard, please leave the server until you return, especially at peak playing periods.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

re: the "away from computer"...I think there are some mutes you can get that will automatically boot idlers if they sit still for too long. Have to look around.

re: trash talk...hmmmm, should we define trash talk? I mean, there's "ooo, you got own'd!" and then there's "yeesh, you couldn't hit the side of a barn" and then there's "my team kicks your teams &lt;explentive deleted&gt;". You got playful ribbing, mild trash talk and then obviously bad trash talk and unsportsman-like conduct. Maybe a good rule of thumb is "If you wouldn't say it to your mom, don't say it here".

I personally don't trash talk, and trash talk doesn't bother me - it's not worth my attention - but a little playful verbal sparring could be tolerated; it's part of playing any game, and some might argue part of the fun to egg each other on to higher levels of play. But it can easily get carried away, so an official zero tolerance rule is probably the best way to go.

re: Kidan and "sprays"....huh? Isn't that a Counter Strike thing?

re: banning...Plankeye, if you're around, can we actually ban ip addresses? Or can we only do kicks?

Now, how about some DO's to go with our DON'T's?

- Compliment your teammates, and compliment your adversaries: they could be on your team next round
- If the teams are imbalanced, switch; if you're on the short handed team, make sure you make some noise *before* the round ends [I wish UT2004 alerted you to short handed team situations like Q3F does]
- Be a team player: link up to take nodes, run behind tanks and heal them, GIVE PEOPLE RIDES!!! [One of my biggest peeves is somebody taking off in a Hellbender solo, or not stopping in a Manta to pick up somebody on foot]
- Help noobs, don't hurt them.
- Be respectful of the rules, respectful of the Admins, respectful of our beliefs, and help us maintain a good, clean, high quality server that every one can enjoy!

Thoughts?

re: Tank Laming...ran into this kind of thing with Q3F and I agree with heiscomingsoon, these are valid game tactics. I'm not sure you can place a tank in such a key position that it's impossible to not take it out if you work together with another teammate. That manta situation is interesting, but I'd have to see where you're putting it - hard to believe that there's some place where a AVRIL or Raptor can't reach.

PS - our current server admin list:

Plankeye
Kidan
Tek7
Rizz
Coldsteel
Shagz

Kraniac has some good ones, and I particularly like Shagz's "DO's". As Christians, we should be ecouraging and uplifting. Plus, it always feels nice when someone else says "Good Jorb" after you pwn some people, especially if it comes from the person you pwnt.

Rizz, if you hate "tank laming" you will hate me. I do that with the Hellbender too... I drive to a secluded and advantageous spot, switch to the third position and for the next few minutes you will see nothing but:

Player was incinerated by [toj.cc]James's twin beams

And my team loves it too because the entire enemy team is focused on me while my teammates capture all the nodes. It's a tactic and you sir need to get used to it.

As for the rules, I agree that there should be no trash talking. We are called to be representatives of Christ, and I have never seen God trash talk. If anyone has a right to trash talk it is God, but instead He calls us to be humble.

Let your actions speak of your skill, not your mouth.

I also agree with whoever warned of some spiteful people using offensive names just to get under our skin and mock the Lord. You need to be prepared to defend against that. Try to make sure there is always at least one Admin on the server at all times. Nothing would be worse than having an offensive player on and no ToJ'ers with Admin access.

The non-Admin ToJ'ers would be ridiculed in such a situation for their inability to deal with the offender, and that would not be good.

True, but it's a fact of life. With so few admins, it's not possible for one to always be on. The CS chapter has a lot of admins, but there are frequently times where there are none on the server and rules get broken and people get mocked. It just so happens that even admins have other things to do than play games. The CS admins are usually available by one the instant messenger clients, and if not (which is pretty rare in my experience), Elite has never complained to me about receiving condumps in his inbox - and I've sent him more than a couple.

Anyhoo, I think the main thing is that admins need to be available, though not necessarily always in a game. I've found it best, when confronted with punks, and no admins available, to:

1. Warn them several times, while trying to get a hold of an admin. This usually results in mockery.

2. Ask them to stop being a jerk (in so many words), and warn them that you'll be sending a condump to an admin.

3. Type 'status', 'condump' in console, zip it up, and email it.

4. Inform the punk of the action taken.

5. Drop it altogether and just play. After all, there's nothing more I can do, so why persist in agitating? They're only seeking attention anyway.

I don't know about condump equivalents in UT, as I am a total n00b, but these handy tips work well in CS, and can probably transfer to UT.

I agree with James, that such an occurance should be defended against, but at the same time, Espresso is right in saying that all these guys really want is to get under our skin, be an aggitator, and get some attention.

If you give the guy attention, telling him to change his name, stop swearing, whatever, you're just giving him what he wants, he now has somebody ticked off at him and he's just going to egg you on further.

I think maybe ignoring him while contacting an Admin to deal with the situation is a better route. That way you don't open yourself, as a non-admin, to being rideculed (sp?) for not being able to do anything about the guy and you're not playing into his hands. I think I mentioned before that Admins should be the only ones responsible, at this time, for dealing with rule violators 'cuz they're the only ones with the power...but feel free to correct me if this sounds good in theory but doesn't work well in practice.

re: the number of admins...something may be done about that in the future, but for now perhaps we just stick with these guys. Besides, the server hasn't been up long enough to determine our playing schedules and determine if we need more people with admin privliges. We're not even solid on our Admin Tool of choice yet.

PS - I'm glad I'm on James team...

And if you don't let him know his behavior is unacceptable, the server won't be Christian for very long.

It may be a fact of life on other servers, but should we not make more of an effort? If Christians act exactly like secular people, what is the point of being saved?

Judge a tree by it's fruit, and I for one don't want any secular people coming on our server and experiencing cussing and the like... Not a very good witness.

Right, good points James.

My main point was not to give the guy what he wants - attention - unless you're an admin who has the power to back up your warnings. It just adds fuel to the fire in my experience. But you're right, there is a certain level of credibility that has to established if we're going to advertise ourselves as a christian server/clan.

I guess stick with what Espresso said: if you're not an admin, give him the warning anyways, so he and everybody else who may be new learns the rules, as well as maintain our own integrity as a christian clan, and if they continue, contact an admin to rectify the situation, if one is available. (take a screen cap for now if you can; have to look up how to spit out a console dump)

If no admin is available at the time, then you got your screen shot or dump file, e-mail it to an admin and then ignore the guy.

There, I just retyped Espresso's copy. :p

PlankEye - once we've solidified these rules, we should probably put 'em on our site and make a note of the URL in the MotD.

(Hmmm...I wonder if there's a chat filter mutator...)

BTW, you can kick AND ban users - at least via the web admin. Not sure about through the Admin Mutator yet, haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
