Can PC's auto-shutdown/restart itself?

At first, while the PC was running, I turned off my monitor and the PC shutdown...then it turned on itself and starting running...again.

o...kay...

I was running multiple applications at the same time, that could of been the reason it shut-off and turn-on itself......

How does a PC shut itself down and turn on itself automatically?

Also, it was barely at 40'C, now it says its 28'C but the fans feel like cool air from a fridge. And my case is freezing cold. :D

OS: Windows XP Pro x64
CPU: Athlon 64 3800+

Doing a virus scan just incase.

My PC used to power on when the phone rang. Turns out that the modem was somehow triggering the WOL (Wake-on-LAN) settings.

I'd never heard of that happening before, so it's likely not what's causing your PC to automatically power on, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

i've got a similar problem, mine doesn't shut down, stand by, or hibernate. it only restarts. if you tell it to shut down, stand by, or hibernate, it restarts. this isn't a major problem, but when i do want to shut down (which isn't often), it is a slight pain.

Might be a virus, but I'm waiting for vibro to make a windows comment

It scanned, its clean, though I'm using avast since AVG doesn't work with my OS.

anyway, CF have you found out what was wrong yet?

Could be something random like all the other stuff that goes wrong with my PC.

I do have WOL and other options, but its not active to my router's list.

Sometimes when I leave my PC for almost a day long, something messes up.
Folder icons not working, Short-cut applications not working, etc.

What I do notice, for something thats not active/disabled, it becomes active/enable the moment something is wrong on my PC.

vibrokatana has been perma-banned, so you might be waiting for quite a while.

Oh, not temp-banned, oh well, it happens.

Sometimes it's also a sign of a power supply going bad. For some reason it might be thinking it's getting the "ON" command from the power switch and turning itself on. My recommendation, unplug it, let it sit for a day, then plug it back in. If it's still faulty, I recommend using Sicillian Tech Support. Put big rocks in the case and throw it in a lake.

If i recall, corp uses wireless, so its not WOL.

My keyboard is wireless, my router does use wireless and my game adapter is wireless, but my internet connection from my PC is wired. Its rainbow colored wire going from my PC to the router.

Well, I was thinking of getting a new PSU, I'll try your idea, Taliesin.

Oh, well if you are wired, then do this:

Goto Control Panel
networking connections
right click and go to properties of your LAN card.
Click on the "configure" button.
goto the advanced tab
Find anything that says "PC wake" or "WOL" or "wake on lan" or "magic packet" and disabled it.

See if that does it.

or "magic packet" and disabled it.

I see magic packet, but well, look at it.

Also, is there a glitch or bug with Windows Media Player or/and FireFox?

I played a song on my WMP, but the moment I opened Mozilla Firefox, my computer totally crashed on me. The 2nd time (now), it fine.

And I'm curious, how low shouldn't the PC's temperature be at?
