Gamers past their teen years ignored by gaming publications?

Moderator's Note: I split this post from the An open letter to the hardcore gaming community thread because I feel this is a separate topic. There's some excellent discussion in that thread and I don't want to see it diverted off-topic.

Truth be told, I'm pretty much in the same boat as Tek. I've went from being a hard core gamer to being a casual one.
I wonder how many gamers are in the same situation. If you look at the average gaming "journalism" (quotes intended) publication, it doesn't pay any attention to the 20-somethings and 30-somethings who started on consoles, moved to PC gaming, and returned to console after getting married and having kids.

There are quite a few gaming magazines out there. Why isn't there one that addresses gamers past their teenage years?

I'm 27 and married. I don't care that Ivy has even larger and more unrealistic curves that before in SoulCalibur IV. (Seriously, Namco, a woman shaped like that would have back pain too severe to walk upright, let along fight with a sword. Stop it now. You're embarrassing us.) I don't care that players get to maim civilians in Grand Theft Auto IV. And I really don't care that Take Two is using the AO rating of Manhunt 2 as a way to manipulate the media into advertising the game for free.

I want to know five things about any upcoming game:

1. Will I have fun playing this game?
2. Can I play it with my wife?
3. Will my wife have fun playing this game?
4. When does it come out?
5. How much will it cost?

I'd also like to read a news article that doesn't pour the fuel on the latest fire Rockstar and Take Two have cooked up to grab free advertising, enrage poorly informed attention gluttons like Jack Thompson, and spread "zomg therye goin to ban all video gaems 4evar unles u sign this onlien petishin!" hysteria.

Now that I think of it, is there really such a thing as video game journalism?

I got bored of sp games. It's the same old stuff over and over and over and over...

Now I will buy maybe 2-3 games a year, no money spent on console stuff since I keep my computer up to date (as I use it for work and play).

If I feel like shooting up things I'll hop on CS:S, otherwise I can spend time scripting in SL or playing some rather fun pvp in GW. Alot of my time now is being taken up by job and school so any spare time I have is really spent relaxing in something that isn't that challenging (or is in such a way that it is fun and not repetitive to the point of boredom)

Guild wars PvP eh? Then why don't we ever see you on PvP night? You should come sometime dude, we need good PvP players on the team.

I am definitely a casual gamer myself so I have to agree with virtually everything Tek is ranting about.

I would be up for starting a new online gaming magazine geared toward gamers past their teens, but I don't have the money.

Or staff.

Or experience.

But hey, I can write fairly well! :D

But seriously, does anyone know of a gaming magazine that's at least a smidge more appealing to more mature gamers than EGM or GamePro or the like?

I'd say you don't need that much money. You could contact groups like those old guys that play Halo 2, and through that gain support and other writers. At first, it could be just an e-zine. But as popularity grew, you could turn it into a full fledged beast.

Ivy uses a sharp whip. Sorry, I have a tendency to correct people as seen in most posts.

To have games like DoA: Extreme Volleyball and Rumble Roses, it truly disappoints me, objecting women like that, it would offend the women gamers.

When I saw the ad for DoA: Extreme Volleyball and it showed the guys staring at them, I laughed so hard. :D

Actually, Ivy uses a magical sword that can separate into independently moving magical fragments, which is how she uses it as a whip. Or as Wikipedia puts it, "a snake sword with the ability to expand and contract at will."

i'd say check out familyfriendlygaming.com and contact Paul i'm sure he can give pointers on starting a mag

You have to realize there will be an exception to every statement you make. Usually in the real world you tend to use stuff like probably and maybe instead of will and will not. I don't disagree with the fact that those games are horrible from certain stances, but classifying everything as absolutes can be a folly and shouldn't be something to argue over.

I think he meant "objectifying women like that..." rather than "objecting women like that."
LOL Yeah, I got that. I meant that it does, indeed, offend women gamers, not that it just theoretically could or will. I've seen a few posts and the like by women who are NOT offended, and I've seen a few females at Dragon Con that probably aren't, but I've never actually MET one. The vast majority of women are disgusted by those games, and frankly, they're part of the reason more women just don't game.
