So how do you keep focused when doing projects?

Lately I've found it hard to stay focused on any one thing. Whether it is doing some programming, playing a MMO or just trying to work on a server that refuses to do what you want it to do. I guess some of it is job related stress because most days I will work then come home and crash until dinner then try to work after that.

I used to be able to work for long periods of time on any one task... now I can barely stand to do certain things for long periods. Anyone have any advice? :P

ADD much? :D

I listen to music -- music I recognize and can figure the words out.

I also take a five-minute from time to time, to consciously break whatever concentration I might have on a certain task. It allows your mind to wander a bit and do something else -- that way, by the time you get back, you're ready to start working again.

If I'm writing (not programming), I use WriteRoom, which blocks the entire screen out, so you don't have 4 IM windows, iTunes and your browser calling out to you when you're trying to write.

Na, its programming and graphics design (ugh). I already have all the knowledge and examples down pat I just can't get myself to actually sit down and do it.

I think its because I do most of my website work on my lappy and most of my programming on my desktop. I was debating trying out something like synergy but the screen is so different it isn't really comfortable.

I tried looking for a KVM with DVI ports but the only decent ones that don't fry your monitor cost 300+ USD. Right now my setup is rather uncomfortable I guess. My desk is situated in the corner of the room with my dresser and bedside table to either side (no room to move). At work I have a good 5+ feet to either side to move around. I may scrap the bedside thingy and get some more room.

Does anyone know any good devices to move the laptop to a more comfortable typing position to the side of a desk? I've tried a multitude of things and they all don't work well.

dont try to focus, just do it. When you TRY to focus youre not doing anything or gaining any ground. When you just do what you must , youre brain will just "fall into place". Atleast thats how It works for me. If I think to much about what im going to do or am currently doing then I have opened my mind for distraction. Meh... maybe im just gettin old..lol

You need quiet time -- true quiet time. That means you have to part yourself completely from everything that is going on. Meditate on God's word. I've read some articles that suggest using meditation as a form of completely whiping your mind of thought. They suggest that after you meditate a bit, it's much easier to focus.

its when i get everything else done and finish procrastinating that i finish my work fastest

Wow. WriteRoom is just...beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
And just look at that price tag...
Yeah! And then look at the "Free Download" link next to it. :p

And actually, I don't mind flipping a few bucks to a developer that's willing to make quality software that runs the way I want it to. There's such a community inside the Mac world (developer-wise) that you begin to adapt your thinking. Everyone on the PC side writes stuff that's either shareware or a demo version (mostly commercialized), but on the Mac, you tend to get quality software that you can use for free, and donate if you like it (donationware).

(BTW -- I didn't pay for WriteRoom. I just use the free version.)

I... use ...

wordpad
.exe

I don't write on the computer if I don't have to for the sole sake of the fact that MS Word is atrocious... anyway, I use it for reports and essays and stuff because that's the computer with the printer on it (I guess I could just email the document to that computer, but whatever) but it's kinda painful to use.

Needless to say, I'm frequently distracted. ("Ack, more painfully specific details I have to take note of! Then again, I could check my email again for the ninth time today." or "Ehhh I'm gonna check on my package from Amazon... *minimizes Word* *brings up FF* *hits refresh* Aw, still in Phoenix... *refresh* Aw, still in Phoenix... *refresh* Aw, still in Phoenix...")

Um, no. Sorry, I meant eBay. I had bought like Morrowind or C&C: Generals (w/ ZH) from some guy across the country...

Or maybe that was Amazon? Oh well. I just jogged 1.24 miles and it's 9:16 PM. (it was a really terrible mile, too... I haven't gone so slow in a looooong time. Then again, I'm kinda out of shape (times when it's not soccer season < soccer season) and I had gone swimming and stuff earlier.)
