So, I have a question... and I don't know a better group of people to ask.

With this years taxes, and the stimulus package I got, I have been looking into getting myself an Xbox 360, or a PS3. I don't know which to get though.

The Xbox has an online community - not sure if the PS3 offers that, but the PS3 is a blueray DVD player where the Xbox isn't (granted I dont have a good HDTV..yet!).

Which should I get?
 
I may purchase a PS3 when MGS4 comes out. The PS3 from what I have heard has free online with dedicated servers on sony exclusives (p2p otherwise?). Xbox live costs money and is all p2p.
(p2p = being player hosted on horrible home connections).

I wouldn't touch the 360 with a yard stick except to pulverize it so my opinion probably doesn't matter much.
 
the problem with the dedicated servers is that when the game becomes less popular, odds are, those servers go goodbye...you don't have that issue with the 360. there's also the minor matter that ps3 has yet to have a "killer game" whereas the xbox has had several, e.g. Halo 3, GoW, etc...
further, P2P is hosted on the machine with the connection, so you're going to be paired with similar connections and in the worst case, the person who's managed to use dial-up will suffer while everyone else pounds on them.


the 360 online services are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar superior to PS3 and provide you with a ton of content - you get a small credit with your subscription to buy things as well such as tv shows or movies, so it's not a horrible deal exactly.

BluRay is a plus for PS3...and the primary reason I got one, however I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor as the 360 can at least support BD player in the same manner it supported the HD add on.

not that it matters to you most likely (since you don't have an HDTV, i'm assuming you haven't plunked down $300 for a remote :) )to a large extent, but the PS3 also has some poor design, in particular using BlueTooth to connect devices like remotes. Great...if you plan on keeping 500 remotes around, not so great if you've invested in a good universal remote...one of the more annoying features of it. I suppose I should also add that within having my PS3 for several weeks, it's already seemingly gone wonky - whereas I've had at least 1 360 since it came out, 1 shortly thereafter (maybe a few months) then most recently the elite, with no issues.

Xbox Live Gold subscription (which is the main subscription) is 8 dollars a month or 50 dollars for the year. I don't have a 360, but several friends of mine do and I used Live on the original Xbox. Live is far superior to what the PS3 has. For 50 dollars a year it is a great deal. Personally I would recommend the 360 because the game selection is better so far.

If you don't have an HDTV there really is no point in using Blue Ray. On a SDTV DVD is better quality than what the TV can display anyway.
 
What about the ridiculously high hardware failure rate on the Xbox 360? Even after I start working again and have some disposable income, I'd hesitate to buy a machine that's notoriously unreliable. I know that Microsoft has said "they're working on it," but I have yet to read any articles from independent sources confirming MS's claims.

If the 360 hardware was stable, though, I'd be hard-pressed to argue against it. I've only seen a bit of Xbox Live (thanks to Elihu, who owns a 360) and I already like it.

REZ HD, Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, and Super Puzzle Fighter II HD are strong selling points, too.

Now if Microsoft could find a (independently verified) cure for the RROD (Red Ring of Death) and allowed Red Octane to sell individual wireless guitars for Guitar Hero 3 (instead of being punks and making the 360 the only system for which you can't buy individual guitar controllers), I could recommend a 360 without hesitation.

By the bye, Microsoft has already said they have no intentions of offering a BluRay add-on for the 360.
 
IMO I would rather pay nothing because I don't think I would game online much with a console. Plus the associated cost adds up over the lifetime of the console. Add in that the PS3 can run linux (only 256MB of ram, but hey). None of the games really interest me at this point in time but a few on the PS3 (like uncharted) really tempt me.

I am a tightwad though, instead of spending I shove my money into a savings account.
 
For a flat payment, I say get the PS3 since it looks like it might turn around later this year and you got a massive PS2 library. If you're more into online play, then 360 seems it has a lot of great titles (Mass Effect, Halo3, GoW, Too Human later on) and it also sports 4 players. Go Wii with Gamecube games if you're a cheap man. :P I personally would go the 360 (titles look better) or a PS2 (130 bucks :P), since I already got a Gamecube. :P

IIRC, there were some major compatibility issues with PS2 games, to the point where Sony threw in the towel and said they'd done all they were going to do for compatibility's sake.

personally, this isn't a selling point either way (since both offer *some* backwards compat), but I really don't care to play old games, aside from perhaps Mech Assault on a current gen console.
 
Well I don't have a PS2, or a ton of Gamecube games. But I would consider a Wii if Nintendo had better games for it (Nintendo > Everyone else imho).

I knew the Xbox 360 had issues when it was released, I thought they had fixed them. My friends all have 360's and none of them have a PS3, one of them has a Wii.

I am leaning towards the 360 because of the games it has, and I heard they (Microsoft) were waiting to see if Blueray would win out over HD-DVD, which it did.

It seems that it would be a terrible decision for MS to not offer it (reminds me of the Gamecube and the minidisc thing Nintendo used for it... Horrible mistake to forgo a DVD player for a mini-disc player, despite the mini-disc could hold as much as a normal DVD, around 4 gigs).

Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit are scheduled for a Q2 2008 release. Wii Ware debuts in May.

Nintendo consoles have a history of having a weak showing in their first year, then pumping out high-quality titles in the second year of the console's life. The DS also got off to a slow start and now features a huge library of solid titles.

I have yet to read that an independent source has confirmed Microsoft has resolved their hardware issues. Until I do, I will not purchase a 360.

Don't assume that Microsoft will offer a BluRay add-on. It wouldn't be the first time MS has made a bad business move.

Also, don't assume that BluRay is going to be the only vehicle for high-definition movies. I believe Microsoft is supporting downloadable content over hi-def DVDs.

What really damaged the Gamecube was a lack of online capabilities and a weak game library (when compared to other systems of the same generation). The mini-disc had little impact, except to help curb piracy. Piracy is much more common on the Xbox and PS2.

The strongest selling point for the 360 is probably still Xbox Live.

And the Wii is still a solid choice for a current-gen console, even if its first-year titles aren't as strong as some had hoped.

EDIT: Then again, if online if your main focus, then the Wii (sad as I am to say this) probably isn't the way to go.

I'll just say this. Given that I got my PS3 out a pure right place/right time/right circumstance, and given that I could have traded in for a 360, at the suggestion of a GameStop employee, I'm glad I didn't. Sure, there's games I would love to play on the 360, but apart from the price tag on the 80 GB unit, the PS3 really is a nice system.

Right now what it has going for it:

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Resistance: Fall of Man

MotorStorm (wasn't too fond of it at first, but now it's grown on me.)

Folklore

Heavenly Sword (I wouldn't ever in a million years pay $60 for this game, but definitely worth a rental)

Eye of Judgment (if you like card games), not to mention there are some cool PSN titles priced at $2 that are way fun to play around with the EYE camera

Not to mention, if you're in the market for a Blu-Ray player at all, once the Firmware 2.20 patch comes out in a few days the PS3 will be the only thing on the market until late this year or early next year that will play Profile 2.0 (or BD Live - DLC for movies I believe, something like that mainly), although the no 2.0 movies are out yet so whatever on that right this moment.

When you look at the exclusives PS3 will be getting this year, it's definitely going to be a contender as far as large install bases go. It won't by far catch up to XBL by any means, this year, or probably next, but I suppose anything is possible.

Lined up this year:

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - $40, only a few tracks, and maybe 60 cars, but it will be a taste of what's to come in the full GT5 later this year. AND it's already hit near 1,000,000 pre-orders (in Europe, but still).

Metal Gear Solid 4 - YES.
&
Metal Gear Online - Again, YES.

Resistance 2: A full 8 player Co-op campaign to complement the single player, and 60 player online.

Little Big Planet - Could be the most overhyped game of the year, but it seems to keep people talking.

HOME - This is what could pull them up to compete with XBL if it stays FREE and ends up not being a huge piece of junk (so far it's look way cool to me)

As far as the next few years, who knows? 2009? God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII and POSSIBLY Versus XIII (as far as I know, the end of 2009 would be the earliest either game is out though)

Hopefully this didn't come off as some crazy fanboy post, but the PS3 has a lot to offer at this point, and looks like it will only get better and I didn't see too many in-depth "here is what Sony can offer YOU for your money" posts. So, all in all, I'm happy with my PS3, and while I definitely want a 360, I wouldn't give up the PS3 to get one. Ever.
 
I am pretty sure I am getting the Xbox. However, I played old school Harvest Moon for the SNeS on my friend's Wii this week and it made me wonder how addictive the Wii version will be... because the old school version was ridiculously addictive. =P

I am SO CONFUSED!

I am getting a used version of Harvest Moon for my Game Cube for now...

I am so addicted to Bioshock btw...

the only thing we play on the wii is wii sports. which is sad...we bought zelda, mario & some other game, but after having solid gaming system like the 360 or ps3, the wii graphics and sound leave a lot to be desired, so the only thing going for it imnsho are "party games" and such.

we won't get into the part where someone tried to pants me b/c i was beating the crap out of them at boxing...and still...sitting on the floor with my back to the screen, i still beat him. you can't buy memories...err...nightmares...like that with a 360 or ps3 :D

I played my friend's Wii and knocked the snot our of him (his Mii anyway...)

Its pretty depressing that the Wii doesn't have a better gaming selection.

in my personal opinion , i have to say dont go near the PS3 or XBOX360 onyl due to teh fact that those gaming systems have teh tendancy to backfire and then you have to spend more money to get it fixed. WII is teh best choice because it not only has solid graphics , great sound quality and online capabilitys but it also give one of teh best lineup of games that nintendo can offer to the public and with the recent release of brawl for teh system , it really bring the Wii to a offical " party" system status bringing many players to the system at once.
