OK, following the footsteps of the ubber drood Treehouse, i'm workign to get my gear up.
Need the mats for the whitemend set.
Anyone who has primal mooncloth or primal mights, i would love to buy them from you to make these 2 sets. you can send them to me i/g COD or just let me know here on the forums. I want to spend my gold inside the guild if i can and do NOT have the patience to farm these....: )
Please let me know if you can help me out! thx!

You're taking druid advice from a Shammy? You're going to wear cloth as a resto druid? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Go:
Pants of Living Growth http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31335
As a resto druid, you want spirit for ToL and because it gives you crazy mana regen since 2.4 The Whitemand, despite being CLOTH, gives you no spirit. Once you use your gem slots to give you spirit, you lose the upside from being able to really crank up +healing. Now the comparison is a little unfair since Whitemend is Item Lvl 105 vs. 100 for the Living Growth pants, so the pants don't stack up 100% ... but you can't wear CLOTH! Now the set bonus on Whitemend is nice but you're not a druid tailor, right? Please?

Hood of Primal Life http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29505
Now these items are a little better matched b/c they're both lvl105 ... but again, the Whitemend has no spirit white the Primal Life has nice spirit. While the stam isn't strictly helpful, it never hurts ... and the int increases both the mana pool but also gears up the mp5 regen ratio from spirit.

And the leather items are *way* cheaper, too ... no primal might and timer-governed cloth thingees.

/pwn'd by gilga!

Gilga is the guilds leet druid, so listen to him! I suggested the whitemend because the mana regen is REALLY close, and you have a bunch more +healing.

Warning Math Content: (And since i did it, it's most likely wrong...)

In 2.4 Blizz changed the way mana regen works. Intelect now plays a roll in your regen. It's also important to remember that mp5 is regening all the time at it's advertised amount. Spirit/int only regen at 1/5th it's full amount while you are casting.

So here is what i came up with in my head...

The leather items would give him the following stat bonus...

all armor-
int-375
spirit-374
just 2 leather pieces-
mp5-0
healing-145

The Whitemend set with 4 royal nightseyes, and 2 luminous noble topaz would give the following stat bonus...

all armor-
int-361
spirit-308
just whitemend set-
mp5-30
healing-195

So based on baldeys stats (358 int, 332 spirit), a 7 min fight, where he uses 1 innervate...

With his current gear he would regen 153 mp5
Whitemend would give him 173 mp5
The leather gear would give him 177mp5

If the fight went to 12 mins, but he was unable to use a second innervate The number would be...

With his current gear he would regen 131 mp5
Whitemend would give him 148mp5
The leather gear would give him 145mp5

So the bottom line is depending on the length of the fight, based on regen, in short fights the leather could be better, in longer fights, the whitemend will be better. But regardless, the whitemend has and extra 50 +healing.

Now we need miri to figure out how to compare 50 +healing to between + or - 3-4 mp5... my brain hurts. gilga, can you make a venn diagram?

oh, by the way, i didn't do this in my head, i used this...

Oh one more part of the calculation. Is there some amount of shame associated with wearing cloth? Not sure how to calculate that into the equasion... :D I think gilga needs to come up with a "shame coefficient"!

Excellent analysis, Tree! There is a lot of druidic wisdom out there that says that the Whitemend set is superior. Definitely if you're just looking a pure +heal/mp5 combo, it roxx my leather proposal.

However, you can't leave out the pecularities of Treeform. The leather combo gives another 66 spirit, which in Treeform translates to +16 healing. So just straight up, that reduces the healing gap from 50 to 35. And because that bonus applies to all healing done on your group ... if you're in the MT group and there are 5 healers mostly healing the MTs, that's really +15 x 5 = +75 healing that you're contributing to the raid ... way more than the +50 you'd contribute solo from the Whitemend. In my case, since the other 4 healers are likely to be better healers than me, +1 heal to someone else is actually better than +1 heal to me!

But the spend I think is the big near-term pragmatic reason to go with the leather combo: the price difference. Here are the median prices from WoWEcon and the buyout prices from WoWhead (I'm assuming the prices of the mats scale proportionately to the prices of the complete items):
Leather Pants: 450g / 1000g
Leather Hat: 800g / 1000g

Cloth Pants: 1200g / 1500g
Cloth Hat: 1400g / 1500g

So no matter how you slice it, it's rougly 1000g savings to get the leather set -- and that's before having to spend 300g+ on the six gems for the cloth set. With the 1300g savings, Baldey could:
1) Buy a Golden Spellthread for the pants (300g)
2) Buy 1240 Sunfury Signets which gets him to Scryer Exalted(620g)
3) Buy the Seer's Cane, which replaces the +50 spirit from his current staff with +36 healing and +10mp5 and +20 int and +20 stam so stats comparable to the Whitemend set for alternative gear (56g)
4) Buy 8 Arcane Tomes to turn into Arcane Runes to buy the Greater Inscription of the Orb from the scryers, which gives +22 Healing and another mp5 from his current (120g)

So that's spending 1100g of the savings ... in theory leaving 200g+ in change vs. just the two cloth pieces ... and you end up with turning a gap of +35 heal into a gain of like +50, plus better other stats, but scryer exalted.

Still end up with a bracer issue but there's not a BoE upgrade from your current cloth ones that I know of, sigh...

Lastly -- I don't want to talk about the cloth shame factor ... either I'll have to be polite and lie or I'll end up offending someone.

HAHA! Good point on the tree of life! See what i mean? I can't hang with Gilga on the druid thing. I tossed in my branches long ago. Though increasingly i've been enjoying healing on treebranch!!!

You also need to calculate the fact that Deamiter is a JC, and money is no object...

On that last part ... in 2.3-something they upped the bonus from talents such that about 30% of your mp5 continues to regen even if you're within the 5 second rule (it had been 15%). So if you get to roughly 400 spirit / 400 int, one point of spirit is worth about 1 mp5 (outside 5-seconds) and 1/3 mp5 (inside 5-seconds). This really does change what spirit is worth.

Pre-2.3, comparing, say, the +8 spirit gem to a +3 mp5 gem there was no contest. The +8 spirit gem was only worth like 15% x 5/8 x 8 = 0.75 mp5 while casting which is its main utility. But now, that same +8 spirit is worth 30% x ~1 x 8 = 2.4 mp5 while casting and 8 mp5 while not casting (not to mention the +heal in treeform). So while the 3 mp5 gem is clearly more pure mana regen while casting ... the spirit is more versatile and certainlty "competitive".

Wallawinski clothy for life!!!!

Wallawinski clothy for life!!!!

Wait, both *WALL* and Baddwin are viewing this thread currently! If that means that Wall needs to two-box the forums (in addition to the game) now just to keep up, too, I think that alone says something big about the kind of nerfing that wearing cloth does to an otherwise skillful player...

But...Wall and Badd both wear spellstrike set....DID THAT JUST HAPPEN...DID I JUST BLOW YOUR MIND!!!

Note the yellow thingees behind the nightelf's head in the sig picture below ... that is Gilga's mind being blown...

I REPENT!!! Gilga, will you forgive me? i was seduced by all the leaves and what i thought was the tree of knowledge....Forgive me.
Now...where do i get those LEATHER items??!!
thx y'all for the great help. i take back the request for the mats for the whitemend and promise to where leather whenever possible... : -)

W00t, way to go!!

* The pants are a BoE world drop -- a few go on the AH every week.
* The head is crafted. While I don't have the recipe (I've been looking for it on the AH ... the pattern is also a BoE world drop), many high-level LWs do. And since Nethers are now BoE that makes them pretty easy. Mats for the head are:
6 Heavy Knothide Keather
20 Primal Life
8 Primal Water
1 Primal Nether

<Icthus was just wall of text crit'd for 1,346,678,934,764,753 and is non-rez-able>
