Water found on the moon!

Havent you guys seen Wallace & Grommit... the moon is most defintely made of cheese... and contains skiing robots..

And now it's a giant spherical rock orbiting the earth that also happens to have a few H2O molecules.

Whoa. Makes my jaw drop just thinking about it.

Some things never change :P

Why is water on the moon important?

Many reasons actually, but I'll give you two good, solid, concrete reasons.

First, if water is found to be on the moon in any decent quantity, it can be harvested and used as fuel for lunar missions. Not just to and from the moon, but from the moon to mars for example. The moon is the logical base for space travel, which means lunar sites and colonies would have to be established. You have to power those somehow.

Secondly, water on the moon could be used to create a breathable atmosphere for those lunar colonies and bases. That's one less thing that has to be transported from Earth, freeing up time/space/energy/money for more important things.

Of course, this all depends on exactly how MUCH water is on the moon, particularly on the poles where it would exist in greater concentration.

There you go ;)

I remember that now! The use-for-fuel thing. That's pretty danged cool--and more importantly, useful. Also, glad to see you back.

Problem:

Apart from certain motived individuals(motived by an offer of citizenship), most illegal immigrants will simply refuse to fight. Most are not qualified for combat duties either.

Problem:
Volunteers to build a colony will be few and far between... :rolleyes:and in any case, most people are not qualified for such a task. (Most of us ain't even cut out to be astronauts)

Problem:
A lot of the soldiers probably won't be too happy about their job being taken away... would you want to be a Senator if you'd been a Marine for fifteen years?
(Seeing as how this would be a most excellent opportunity to ship all those dimwits in Congress to another planet, those would be the first jobs needing filled.)

It's unfortunate your plan won't work, Bonk... I think most people would be in favor of it - or at least the part where we send all the politicians to the Moon to build a spaceport.

"Okay guys, we've got the communications array set up. I'm sending out a request for more food... now! Um... NOW! ...NOW!!! Why isn't it doing anything? And why the heck is this "generator" powered by used AAA batteries?? Hey, why is this "call" button made out of crushed bottle caps??? WAIT A MINUTE I THINK WE HAVE BEEN DUPED"

probably as much as suggesting we sell moon water or talking about filling a moon base with soldiers while illegal immigrants fight our wars. *shrug*

actually his point is quite valid. A previous poster said we can't afford a moon station.. DV pointed out that many people said the same thing about ISS 20 years ago. I clearly remember those discussions. Anyway, he only responded to what was already in the thread....not derailing the thead any worse than what it already was.

The Impossible Dream

Orville and Wilbur didn't build a 747 did they?

"The Japanese didn't make swords like that till the Middle Ages. So where...did it come from? If I could verify its existence it would be like discovering a 747 a thousand years before the Wright Brothers ever flew."

Uh, ok :)

I actually heard an interesting analogy many years ago..someone said that if the aviation industry had evolved as quickly as the computer industry, we would have been on the moon nine years after Kittyhawk.

By the way...happy 50th anniversary to NASA!
