Tribe of Judah needs help collecting quotes for colocation

I posted the following in the Tribe of Judah General Discussion Forum on August 10 and have yet to receive any replies. I figured I'd post the same request here and see if anyone steps forward to help out.
I need some people who are willing to contact datacenters and request quotes for Tribe of Judah's future dedicated server.

More specifically, we're looking for quotes for:
  • 1u colocation space
  • Power
  • Unmetered 10 megabit port
  • 5 useable IP addresses
We currently plan to purchase the hardware and have it installed at a datacenter. That plan is subject to change depending on the quotes we receive and members' monthly donation commitments.

I'm currently juggling CGA and ToJ administrative duties, searching for a job, and the occasional bit of writing. I need help with this project if we're going to use the $2000 USD members have donated to purchase dedicated server hardware and have it installed at a datacenter.

The bottom line: The faster we get the quotes, the faster we can make a decision, and the faster we can have new game servers online.

If you're willing to dedicate a few hours to helping out, post a reply or send me a PM.

I personally have never dealt with a data center and subsequently have never had the need to call one, naturally I haver a few questions...

What is the best way acquire a list of data centers to call?
<I'm so new at this I can't even think of more questions I would run across...>

:)

I tried to google the above criteria and came up with a TON of places. Unfortunately I also know VERY little about what we're dealing with and not sure what questions need to be asked\answered. If I provide a list of centers here, would that help anyone who does know about this stuff to get quotes?

I'd recommend starting with the information presented in the original post:

If the datacenter asks any questions you can't answer, post those questions here or in the original thread. I'll do my best to answer and ask Hescominsoon to answer if it's beyond me.

Most definitely. :)

Just a quick start...took me all of 5 mins. Again, since I have no clue what we're looking for I'd prefer if someone knowledgeable about this stuff called or checked on pricing. If you'd like more links to more places let me know and I'll hammer out some more for everyone to work on.

cihost.com offers color for 99 bucks BUT they dot he 95th percentile stuff.

the server connects at 5 100 megabits.

you are allowed 5 megabits sustained

if your usage goes over that then you get charged voerages(which they did not detail to me on the phone)

So there is no way to force your machine to stay at only 10 megabits.

I would rule this out as well.

95th percentile is actually pretty nice if you have small times of the day where you peak out, so long as you don't constantly go over your allotment.

considering this machine is going to run the toj webiste,e-mail, and at least 6 game servers we will always be above 5 mbps

Actually Vmware ESXi 4.0 free can limit bandwidth on the Port Group level. You can limit bandwidth to 10mbit inside VMware while in 95th percentile from Cihost. I can give you a demonstration HCS on my ESXi box.

Until they come out with tagging for virtual memory I wouldn't use a virtual machine for a game server. The CPU cache gets trashed every time the context is switched as well as other fun performance overheads.

exsi actually has a cell based architecture where a vm never leaves a given die. If you are using quads you set the cell size to 4 and vmware will not let vm's cross processor sockets.

Yes, excessive CPU waits can happen in a virutal environment. I've never run large and popular Game servers inside a VM before. I just manage a infrastructure running apps/web servers.

Another thing that is possible is CIhost will set your uplink port to 10mbit, or you can hard code the NIC on the Linux box to be 10mbit as long as you let Cihost know you want the cisco either hard coded to 10mbit full (preferred) or set it to auto auto (not desired).

Correct, this is done at the hypervisor level, just never go 8 vCPU's, then your transversing the bus for memory allocation.
