Valve's new game is DOTA2

From the studio that brought us Half-Life, Portal and Team Fortress, the next big thing will be Dota 2. That's a new Defense of the Ancients game coming to PC and Mac in 2011.

Valve describes the game as "a massive sequel for one of the most played games in the world."

Dota is shorthand for "Defense of the Ancients," a style of real-time strategy game that requires players to channel and protect herds of computer-controlled minions as they attack an opposing force. DOTA games have been popular since they were birthed as a mod for WarCraft III.

That's nice, Valve. And look, we're grateful you released Alien Swarm for free and we're all looking forward to Portal 2.

But can you please do some actual work on Half-Life 2: Episode 3 now?

Srsly. Duke Nukem Forever is going to come out first at this rate. (It hurt to type that.)

Also: I hope that the makers of Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends invested their money wisely. Because their source of income will probably disappear once DOTA2 releases.

What's DOTA?

/didn't care too

Dota = my most hated custom game ever due to its overratedness and attitude of the devs. Just my 0.02 as a wc3 mapper who frowns upon such behaviour.

All this makes me want to dig out my WC3 and install it... moreover it makes me want to be good at it............

Also..... Icefrog was the dev team that worked heavily on the DoTA mod for WC3... That's the team that's working on this one.... So basically.... even though this game is getting developed and released by valve, it doesn't affect the development time of HalfLife2:Ep3 in any way whatsoever. This is cuz valve hired IceFrog:)

Well.... if there was any development going on.... it didn't get affected because the real team behind this DoTA game is icefrog lol....

I've played DotA off and on for a while and absolutely love it. LoL is ok. It's a massive improvement in the item system from DotA but I think it's a little too easy to die, even for the tank heroes. In DotA a good player required a lot of coordination and effort from the opposing team to kill. In LoL even the tough guys can easily be killed by having one hero hide in the grass and one fight directly and then ambush them.

With that said, I'm eager to see how the game works out in the Source engine were IceFrog has more flexibility in the underneath design and isnt constrained by the WC3 engine.

The game may be overrated but its ok. What I don't like is people playing EXCLUSIVELY dota and thinking it is superior to all other custom maps and basically being a big fanboi. Also don't like the devs' high and mighty attitude. The game itself ain't that bad.

Don't like WC3. Loved DotA. I liked other custom maps too, like many tower defense maps. But I never found many other team-based versus maps that I ever liked remotely as much as DotA. Too many were either to close to normal WC3 gameplay that I don't like, or too close to dota to bother to switch. Hero Wars, Battleships, sheep, all those things just didn't grab my attention.

That being said, I don't see why I'd ever play DotA2. The Aeon of Strife game concept that DotA popularized is now far from new, and LoL and HoN both do it well. LoL isn't perfect, but since it is free why switch? They'll have to impress me with some really great new gameplay without losing the original feel or else the nostalgia value itself won't be enough.
