Guild Wars Prequel

I just wanted to throw this out their. I was thinking of ways ANet could make some extra money and as part of the Guild Wars: Beyond content. I would like to see a Guild Wars Prequel. Maybe see a re-skinned smaller world (triple the size of Pre-Searing or so) and have it based on the actual Guild Wars between Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr. Maybe make add some form of World PvP to test out in GW before GW2 is released. Some simple missions and quest with 12 man parties or have it a persistent world on however many districts needed. Thoughts?

Personally I'm against anything that slows down GW2 even more than it already is.

New missions, heroes, and shiny weapons are okay, but if it goes any further than that, I'm like... dude... my Asuran thief is waiting!

Also, I don't really fancy putting more money into much (he said, as if he wasn't going to break down and get mercenary heroes just because it's cool).

Nothing they add to Guild Wars slows down Guild Wars 2, the live team i'm sure are all payed their wages regardless of whether they're working on skill balancing and/or a major content patch. That being said, something like this may be beyond the scope of the live team. Still, they could go the Everquest route and continue building expansions for Guild Wars even after Guild Wars 2 is released.

And I can think of reasons why they would as well as reasons why they wouldn't.

Still, on topic, I'd think the most we're probably going to see of something like this is stuff similar to the bonus pack missions. It would be nice if they weren't all solo though. It'd be nice for us to get access to more lore without just reading it on the wiki.

Honestly, I hope we get more mini-add-ons after GW2 is out because, frankly, I'm not planning on getting GW2. It's going to be released after my first kid is born and before they are a year old....probably not going to have time to sink into the games I already have, let alone start brand new ones.

My wife and I had our first 7 months ago and she is pregnant with our second right now. Don't worry you will have time for games. It wont be as often or for like 10 hours straight but a few as they are napping and when they go to bed assuming you don't work night shift. However, the first 2 months are a world different. Little ones eat ALL the time. Prob. no time to play then, at least their wasn't for us.

Bonus Mission Pack was (in a lot of ways) a prequel. Do you own it?

They don't have resources in GW1 for something like that to begin with, but even if they did it would fail hard for several reasons:
1) Size matters. People don't like a few bonus missions that they blast through in a few hours; they want a campaign. That's well beyond the scope here.
2) Replayability. A few bonus missions provide very little playability unless there is a huge reason to replay them...like fat, fat loot. That leads to problem #3.
3) Let's say they add a dungeon pack that includes two awesome dungeons where the ectoplasm, obby shards, and torment gemstones flows like rain...for only $10. Cue whining. People will whine that the new area gives people an advantage for money. Other people will bemoan the loss of activity in the UW, DoA, and FoW.
4) Profit. Think about the effort that went into making the BMP for $10. Now think about the fact that people (like myself) are willing to pay money for extra character slots, costumes, mercenary heroes, etc. We're not being charged monthly for GW1, and they aren't making money on GW2 yet, so as a business I'd probably be doing the same thing. I've been very happy with how ANet has handled things and maintained equal advantage for all players to the extent that they have.

I'd highly encourage you to check out the BMP if you hadn't, and I'm not sure where you are with your titles, but doing those in HM have added tons of replayabililty for me. I almost quit GW two years ago because I was so bored after finishing the campaigns and having nothing to do. Now if they'll just add another overarching title for super-HM... :)

Edit to add: I also thought game time was going to be doomed after having a child. Just not so, they sleep a lot. As said, don't expect to play for 15 hours straight very often, but a few hours here and there is no problem. Let me also say:

THIS IS WHY I LOVE GUILDWARS SO MUCH THAT I TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND BOLD.

I do not believe I could play WoW or other online games that require coordination of teams. GW is the right game for my schedule.

I'd say your right Ryan, and no I haven't played the BMP yet mainly b/c it is solo.

And gerrt I wish they would do more with lore. Thats kind of my reasoning behind it. It seems strange that for a game titled "Guild Wars" that we don't actually see the Guild Wars mentioned in lore. Plus, I'm a lore hound and LOVE anything associated with it. I really think GW has a good story but it does a poor job telling it in game.

I do find it odd that most folks don't know that GW gets its namesake from the Guild Wars that Adelburn was a part of, and that's how he became king and why he hates Kryta so much. I would say that if anything was going to be made into a prequel, that would be the perfect opportunity right there.

I agree they don't do a great job telling it in game - most of the best tidbits of lore are found in some out of the way sidequest, or a bleached skull in the crystal desert. Meh @ that.

I do like the series of books that have been coming out prior to GW2, though. :)

True, I'm waiting to get them all together in a 3 pack. Now if they would write a book about the history of Tyria I would get that in a heart beat. I would love to know more about the creation of the world, the fall of Abbadon and Dhuum, The Guild Wars, The Forgotten, etc.

Fortunately though, thats kind of what the books are for GW2. It'll be nice to have some back story going into it.

Yup, that was my first thought this morning. That was a pretty expedient answer to your request!

Now, just wish for a harder hard mode, please!

Oh, and congratz on the new addition! Do you know the sex?

Yeah! We're having a little girl in August. Super pumped!

Not worried about having no time for games, just don't think I'll really want to get started on something new, bad enough that there's tons that I haven't done on GW1 because 1) I've been on several hiatuses and 2) didn't have access to heros for a long, long time and 3) Just never really sat down and said "Hmmm, lets do FoW tonight!" or "Lets just go get a PuG for DoA and see what it's like."

I still have plenty to do in the game, no point in rushing out to do something new.
