Help please! building a new PC

SKLURB

Called from Darkness Web Developer
Hey all!

I have just been told I have a budget of up to $1000 (tax would have to be included and there is no room to go above $1k) to put toward a new gaming PC.

It's been awhile since I built a machine and am a little out of touch with what's new and awesome and a good value for the price. I typically shop at Newegg.com. I was wondering what CPU, MB, RAM, HD (500 gig is plenty) and vid card would you buy with about $725 of that $1000 (I am eyeballing this monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116455 )

I would mostly be primarily using this PC to play Rift on ultra, Starcraft, and some of the newer, more graphically and CPU-intensive games out)

What are your recommendations if I may ask? Feel free to criticize my monitor choice also. Any help would be immensely appreciated!

PS:
I tend to lean toward AMD processors for gaming
I do already have a 160Gig 10,000 rpm HD that I can use as a backup HD
I already have a 600 watt power supply (I assume that's still plenty?)
I could get away with using my old case, but if I got a new one I would just be looking for something simple, sturdy and low cost.

Thanks for the quick feedback!

The 600 watt power supply does have sata hookups. I like the look of the combo except for that hard drive. 60 gigs is just way too little. I like that its fast, but I would have to pass on that combo. I struggle with 160 gigs on my current one and would just use that with those other combo pieces. The other parts look fine.

I kinda like Nvidia personally. Have had both ATI and Nvidia through the years and have had fewer issues with Nvidia. Maybe things have changes a bit in the more recent years. I would consider giving ATI a go again if there was a big difference in price.

I do have a Nvidia 9800 GT I can use, but I assume something is newer and better by now. I just don't want to dump $300-500 cash into the latest and greatest.

Dude that combo is screaming. Totally put your OS on the SSD and you will be freaking out at the speed. You can get a 1TB data drive for like $70 to hold everything else.

If you don't go with that combo (buy it RIGHT NOW!!!!), I'd stick with AMD and ATi. They are generally more wallet friendly and there is virtually no difference between the comparable brand.

I just sold my computer to Icthus and despite the video card being DOA (don't ever ship with USPS), it still runs everything like a champ. When I built it 2+ years ago, it was around $800.

The only thing in the computer that requires a certain wattage from a power supply is the video card. Check the requirements of the video card first.

Antec 300 - Best. Case. Ever.

If I buy that combo, I more than likely will not be able to afford a video card as I will be spending like $279 of that $1000 on a new monitor, plus the taxes/shipping fees.

I have no experience running two hard drives. Put Windows 7 on the 60 gig and run games off the secondary 160GB SATA drive I already have? (more than likely would have to buy a new secondary hard drive with larger capacity at a different time as that would put me over the $1k limit)\

So if I got:

+
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.575721
+
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116455

my subtotal would be: $944.92
and I would be using my same Nvidia GeForce 9800GT

what do you think?

The combo deal + the monitor you want + the cheapest Radeon 5770 they have in stock comes out to be $1,004.80, $13.83 of that being shipping to my zip, AND... unless Newegg has a distribution site in your state, you pay no taxes. Additionally, if you get a different monitor (like this Samsung) you'd save more money... but you have your heart set on it... so... anyway.

The $5 dollar difference is a value meal from McDonalds.

Moar edits!

Ditch the 300 case.... for now... and buy the video card. You won't regret it.

Are you sure you want a 27" ? That is pretty massive and only has 1980x You will be turning your head all over to see the ends of the screen. You can get a 24" for significantly less with the same resolution. Heck you can almost get dual 24" monitors for the price of one 27" However if this is doubling as your main TV then the 27 might be nice to sit on a couch and watch.

I would upgrade the video card to a DX11 once. The 5770 is a fantastic choice and you can get one for $99

Skip the SSD if you need to save money and grab this instead. It will take advantage of your MBs 6.0 sata

Yep, I am set on a 27" monitor partially for gaming & for graphic design, but also for the option to sit away from this confounded computer desk and take the wireless keyboard and mouse to the sofa. =D

Is there a significant performance/option difference in your alternatives? Right now, Windows 7 boots up pretty fast on my current 10k RPM hard drive, so maybe using that as my main and the 1TB as the slave would be better for me with some of these other components & the video card you are listing.

I think we may be getting this narrowed down! Thank you for your help! I think I may take you up on that 5770.

What's your opinion of this setup/price? You don't seem as excited haha

I like it!

Gigabyte is a solid motherboard producer (one of the MOST solid, actually) and I have never had a bad experience with AMD or ATi (ATi chips don't tend to explode like Nvidias do).

I think you'll thoroughly enjoy this PC for years to come.

Gigabyte is really solid. My motherboard and video card is Gigabyte. Though, my PSU and RAM is Corsair.

I don't like how video cards are 1GB; 128-bit. Seems downgraded compared mine 896MB; 448-bit.
