That is great - can't wait to share it around.

So looking forward to The Hobbit.

My preaching series next Christmas is - An Unexpected Journey.

Don't know what each week will be yet...but it will come to me.

I put out an annual calendar and it is sitting right there for everyone to see. We are going to do the Hobbit at Christmas.

Actually there were quite a few unexpected journeys that first Christmas - Mary's - the Magi - the shepherds. We are invited into the most unexpected journey of all when we go in search of the son.

...wait...I need to write some of this down...

lol - posting on a forum doesn't count - I can never find the good stuff when I need it. I have to cut and paste it into a word document. Is that the same as writing?

I've slotted the series for Advent. Anyone have any good ideas about an unexpected journey - now is the time. Input appreciated.

There are obvious comparisons between the progression of Bilbo's journey and the progression of our journey as we seek to follow Christ more closely. The story starts with Bilbo living in comfort when he is approached by a powerful figure through no merit of his own then selected for a difficult yet ultimately rewarding journey that changes his outlook on the world.

...I should probably stop before I end up writing a wall of text.

No, no. Keep going. I'm taking notes for my lessons too.
I think that may be the first time anyone has ever invited me to continue rambling on about my analysis of Tolkien's works. Whenever the subject turns to Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, people usually listen for a minute, nod politely, and seek to change the topic at the first opportunity.

It's been long enough since I read The Hobbit that I wouldn't be able to offer any fresh insight and other writers likely have more profound things to say. But if I read it again soon, I might just write out a few blurbs on the book as I work my way through it.

I read LotR several years ago, but only recently read The Hobbit. I haven't participated in any deep studies on either work, but I'm very interested...

I was one of those nerds that spent a lot of time discussing theories, character development, plot lines etc in Harry Potter as the books were being written.
