I'm using a Athlon 2800+ XP, Windows XP. Any other more info required for buying 1/2 GB ram, please post here.

I found 8(eight), 1 - 2 GB Ram parts, all at a reliable and good deal. All at Canadian Prices, and the location is very close. I'm not buying it online, only retail. My purpose for the Ram is for CPU speed and gaming, not lag/latency.

I'd like to maximize my Ram to 2 GB since thats my CPU's limit and has only 2 Ram slots.

I've never brought anything higher than 512 MB.
I trust Kingston since it hasnt failed me on my other PC.
Any of those GB Ram, compatible with my CPU?

also try ncix.com they have locations in burnaby and vancouver..thats where i bought all my stuff from, and will be buying new stuff round christmas :)
 
Corp, AMD's only use DDR1 memory, 184 pin DIMMs. So any of the DDR2 ram will not work in your system. Most AMD systems will only take up to PC3200 400mhz DDR1. Depending on your motherboard specifications I would go with fastest speed it can take (my guess on 2800+ would be PC3200 400mhz DDR).

I did look at ncix.com but:

A] I live at Coquitlam, even my work isnt close to its burnaby location.

C] I tried looking just for 1 GB ram, but it keeps showing 2x512 mb ram! Very frustrating.

which qualifies to Talon's suggestion:

Guess that also assumes you live in Burnaby/Vancouver, Pilgrim? Odd, almost everyone that lives in British Columbia are in different districts...

I dont think it matters much, when I haven't heard from anyone outside of Canada thats visited, Vancouver, BC. IF anyone did, they would of at least met 1 of us out of the people that live in BC that is part of this CGA community.

I brought 2 GB Ram, it works, shows its maxed out, 2048 MB, haven't tested on gaming yet, I'm still trying to figure out why my, 54Mbps Wireless-G PCI Adapter isnt working and havent been detected, yet.

[edit] NVM, I'm using wireless internet on my PC! No wires! :)

Corp, run this small program (no install needed), it just detects your computer settings. http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php
This will give you exact details on cpu, system bus (FSB), cache size, clock, ratio with FSB. Ram info (speeds, latencies aka Cas Latencies) size, dual channel or not. It will not do graphics cards though.

Wireless on your own wireless router/gateway? Or are you finding another signal from like next door and using that?

If the router is near you (same room) i wouldnt go wireless. If you or your parents, wife or husband... whichever, goes wireless into a different room in the house, that opens up your entire network. People can wardrive easily like that. (Wardriving is when someone takes a laptop in their car equipped with a wireless eithernet card and looks for wireless broadcasts, they can get valiable info from you like this.) Dont do internet banking or pay any bills online if your computer is on a wireless connection.

Back on the subject of ram.....

~ Try to get matched sets of ram if you can, they are the exact same speed and will run the best
~ While Kingston is a good company, and while it might have worked in your last computer, try to go by what youre motherboard company specifies in this computer.

I ran Kingston in my Asus mobo and it ran fine, but it wouldnt run at all in my Soyo.

Very nice, alot easier than dxdiag. But the technologial stuff, I wouldnt understand, such as:

Its from a Wireless Router. I am the only 1(one) thats using wireless on a PC(desktop). But my sister and a roommate are using their laptops, using wireless internet from our router. [edit] Err, it almost cut me off, anyways, we have 2 addition low spec PC's using wire internet.

In short: 2 PC's wired, 2 laptops wireless, 1 PC(my PC) wireless.

I dont do anything online, however others do, thanks for the warning, i'll warn the others that know the unknown.

But, it has a option is using only our domain and using a firewall, I'm using up to 3 firewalls, instantly. 1 from my pc(well 2 if u count SP2 from Microsoft.com ), 1 from my wireless adapter to the wireless router, 1 from the wireless router itself.

The wireless router is about 20-25 feet away from me, or 1 room away. Its signal strength is from low to good. An average speed of 36.0 Mbps. And next month(August), I'm trying out Shaw's Extreme Speed(Fastest ever) to see if it makes a difference to what I previously using.

Ok, first off ram. You are using DDR SDRAM that stands for Double Data Rate Syncronus Dynamic Random Access Memory. Therefore the speed reported is double that. 200mhz is correct, double that. A Cas Latency of 3-3-3-8 is about average and is it running dual channel? It will show that on the memory tab.
Your cache's look good, full ratio and running at the same speed as cpu as it is on chip, which is normal for todays cpus.

Alright the wireless thing. To stop any body from getting on but what you want on, its called 128-bit WEP encryption. So, type this into you internet address bar "192.168.1.1" if that doesnt work then "192.168.0.1" and it will bring up a box to input username and password (by defualt leave username blank, and password is "admin") Find the wireless security section and enable WEP on 128-bit encryption, it will set a 26 hexidecible password. Make sure to save that password in a txt doc or write it down. Now once you save changes, you will be kicked offline along with everyone else on wireless (hard wire LAN will still remain on, as they are not affected by wireless encryption) Connect to your network, and input the encryption key (a simple copy and paist works fine) twice (it asks for double security). Then you are connected. I wouldn't worry about anyone high jacking or jacking into your wireless when encrypted. I've been encrypted and not had a problem. Have others tried to get on my wireless, yes, but with no luck.

As for cpuz txt dump being long, just do a html dump (way less info but esenctial, even i dont understand all the numbers for memory banks and stuff)

LINKSYS 2.4 GHz 56Mbps Wireless-G Game Adapter

Only for gaming consoles such as the X-Box and PS2. It is sooooooo lucky it works on my PC, however, I cant play PC online games from a Game Adapter.

Mainly for users with wireless connection or wired to the router from a PC/Laptop. I can barely play a game with wireless, but I can averagely play a game with wired.




My question is, Would it be better if I brought a LINKSYS Wireless-G Router?

Anyone have their goods/bads with LINKSYS?
 
I have the WRT54G Linksys router and it works good. Good thing about it is it is linux capatable. It has a built in QOS and is easy to navigate. Wireless encryption is a snap and has a good broadcast range if you jack up the power from the default 50%.

Here is what i get with the router with hard wire Cat 6 50ft LAN cable.

From speakeasy.net speed test, using seattle test site.

Download Speed: 2716 kbps (339.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 617 kbps (77.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

On an AT&T 54g wireless PCI adapter.

Download Speed: 2541 kbps (317.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 610 kbps (76.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
