666 on Corruption/Armor sets?

Alright guys, I played a mage in WoW for about a year and a half, before I noticed the 666 damage on corruption and all the tier 2 armor sets. I then quit the game.

All my friends irl have been telling me I worry about something I shouldn't, and lately I've been questioning my decision to quit. How do you guys feel about this? Thanks!

:) I guess since I answered last time, I'll give it a shot again.

With 666 in the Bible there are a few things to point out:

1) 666 refers to a symbol, not a quantity. It says 666 is the number of a man, not that there are 666 men. In other words, if you have 666 of anything --- grapes, dollars, or shadow damage --- it is just 666 of them, and it is most likely harmless, whereas you may be well to stay away from grapes, dollars, or shadow damages that have 666 tattooed on to them. Or rather, as I point out in my next point, DCLXVI tatooed on them.

2) Also, that symbol wasn't actually "666". It was "DCLXVI" which, interestingly, shows up engraved into the walls of quite a few of the Roman Emperor's palaces during the "Augustus" (self-proclaimed "Divine Emperors") years.

3) Many Christians believe that anything associated with the number 666 is therefore tainted with evil and will cause them to lose their salvation if they associate themselves with such an object. Pardon my British, but that is absolute bulloxs. God is Faithful and Able (completely) from keeping you from falling just because you ate a grape, spent a dollar, or cast Corruption that had 666 somehow associated with it.

I guess the question to ask is: Are you willing to cut yourself of from the fellowship of the saints and your witness to the online community just because there is a remote chance that someone at Blizzard Entertainment worships a "god" that is infinitely less powerful than Jesus Christ and furthermore has absolutely no control over you life since you surrendered to Christ? I'm not. :)

I hope this has helped, but remember --- the only One who knows for sure how the game may affect your life (positively or negatively) is God Himself --- I strongly suggest you sit down with Him and talk your feelings through with Him.

Allow me to apply 15+ years of ministry and a masters of divinity and my working knowledge of greek to this quandry.

It is a number. It only holds power if you allow it too.

Play hard, love well, and forgive.

Allow me to provide a slightly different opinion. 666 is just a number; if I had $666 dollars in my pocket, I wouldn't freak out about it. However, it does have prophetic meaning in the Bible. The world has taken that prophecy and skewed it, making a joke out of anything associated with 666. I'm sure a Blizzard designer intentionally set up the 666 damage for locks, since they're all about demonology, "evil", etc.

All of that, though, is meaningless. The only thing that matters is how you feel about it. If you feel convicted that you should avoid the number, then you need to do so. The Holy Spirit convicts each of us differently. If we ignore those convictions, we are sinning. Example: Shuranda and I are convicted that we should be dressed modestly. If we ignore that, we are sinning; that doesn't mean that everyone is sinning if they don't dress the way we do.

Don't play hard, pray hard. Is this a conviction, or is it a knee-jerk reaction? If you feel convicted, then to what degree? Should you just avoid that number? Don't play a warlock? Or give up WOW altogether?

Seek the Lord; He'll provide the answer, not us fallable humans.

Yep, what they said.

Early Latin manuscripts/translations used 616 instead of the 666 found in the Greek texts, yet noone seems to make a big fuss over it. :)

Eranius (an early church father) brought up the whole 616/666 issue in one of his writings, saying something to the effect of: "I wish people would drop that whole '616' issue... so what if I messed up the copy." 666 is actually the correct symbol.

Hehe.

My point was not to debate whether Nero was the antichrist, or any other topic in eschatology. :P

I was merely agreeing with you and the others that there's a big difference between a number and a symbol, and adding another example. :)

Much <3,

:) I know, I'm just gifted with the gift of Always Being Right, which is a gift I fight against every day.

I also have to constantly remind myself that theology and eschatology are just ways to get to know about God, whereas we are commanded to get to know God. It is kind of like baseball stats. You may know every stat there is about Justin Moreau (sic?), but that doesn't necessarily mean you know Justin himself.

But that doesn't mean that knowing baseball stats is a bad thing, if baseball is your hobby. Theology is my hobby, I just have to remind myself that it doesn't replace a viable relationship with Jesus Christ. I think SamIAm has the best post on this subject so far.

*Whoooah we are off topic*

/agree

Systematic Theology is also a hobby of mine too.

Oh, and this thread has officially been derailed.

You guys crack me up and I love you! :)

I don't think they deliberatly put the number 666 in to scare off the christians who play the game. I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to why they choose 666 for a damage amount for corruption or why all the tier 2 cloth armor values are 666. I think you'll find that the plate sets have equal armor value as well as the mail sets.

I can tell you this, there are plenty of Christians that work at blizzard and that amongst them, some belong to Tribe of Judah and even play on Stonemaul with Redeemed as their guild tag. They even have a prayer group within the company. If I were to find out all the Christians in the company were fired, I'd be worried. Until that happens, I believe God will have his hand in Blizzard Entertainment and we can rest assured that the Fathers will will work through said company.
