Alrighty... I am Ret, as many of your know...and I love it, however, there is not many roles or options for a DPS pally at 70, and it is depressing... I cannot even find decent gear for me... On top of that, I also cannot find a group for anything... So I was considering respeccing, at least for the time being...and I was wanting to know what everyone thought... I have never really played as a tank, and I have healed a lot... I find healing boring, and I do not really want to travel that path, that is what my priest is for... So tank is my primary choice...I would just like peoples thoughts on this and all... I am not sure what I am asking...so, please help...

tanking is fun but expensive. If you wanna be good at it and not be the weakest link in the group you really need to want to do it and put a lot of time and money into it, I'm sure I have at least 1 or 2 epic flying mount worth of gold in enchants, gems, craftables, etc, not to mention all the time into farming badges and all the repair bills:P

But its worth it in the end if its what you want to do. Otherwise just tough it out as a ret pally, they get their turns. IMHO do what makes you happy and dont worry about what everyone else thinks

bleh I have had 2 horribad "pally tanks" in pugs lately, Ret guys who think they can tank lol, last one couldnt even hold aggro off the healer:P Not that I'm saying you would be the same just venting:) Tanking is definately something you have to want to do and takes a bit of research and time to get it right, and then you gotta get the gear, its completely different then Ret, my pally has no STR or AP on any of his gear

soo true, a pally tank without tank gear is worthless in ALL heroics and up.

Being a tankadin is a change of pace. Tanks are always in short demand for 5 mans and such so you should have a lot better luck when LFG. Playing protection is a different mindset. It is not how big can you make the yellow numbers but how many mobs can you take on at once and survive. Get enough mobs on you and the dps is right up there. So the challenge is in the pull, knowing your gear, having the right buffs up and knowing when to use cool downs. Which is what I find the most fun about the spec.

PVPing is different too. A tankadin can be top 5 on damage (and number one in AV) in battlegrounds pretty easily but killing blows are usually pretty weak (consecration spam ftw). Tankadins are a decent flag runner and node defender. Healing and damage are weak for arenas. Holy pallies and Ret pallies really shine there.

There are only a handful of end game bosses that a tankadin can not tank or has an extremely hard time tanking so most of the content is open for us. There are instances that can be very hard (mana tombs) and as you gear up you will need to have alternative sets that will allow you to get hit more often so you don't starve your mana. Yeah I know, kinda funny that the gear you get to advance to the next level of content actually makes you worse at the prior level of content but such is the life of a tank.

If you need to get groups for gear, go Healadin. Paladins are absurdly gear reliant, as your Ret. spec has surely shown you by now. Tanking will be no different than Ret as far as gear goes. But if you need groups only temporarily, go healing, as you can wear armor designed for priests and druids. You'll get the gear to make you a good healer faster than you will get the gear that will make you a decent tank, and the whole reason to get into groups in the first place is to get ret gear ( I am assuming).

Even though you may not like healing, it would be the fastest way to get the gear you need since you can wear more types of gear.

Although, a lot of the gear you would want would be found in Karazhan.

Does that make sense?

Talk to Proudfoot or Niffty.

Hey Noix,
If there's one thing I've learned in WoW it's that you shouldn't comprimise on what you want. I used to heal with my pally pre BC and hated it... I always was wishing that I could be up there DPS'ing. Even though back then Ret was HORRIBLE I would still end up hitting things when I thought healing was covered because that's what I truly wanted to do.

That being said YOU have to decide what you truly want to do. If you chose Ret or Prot it's going to be hard to gear up but don't let that deter you. I'd actually say that gearing up for prot at this point would be much harder for you since you can't just pick up PVP epics for that purpose. The Ret PVP sets for paladins are actually very good and that's what you should be pursuing to upgrade your current gear. ALOT of the stuff you'll need to become great DPS will come from Kara though so get in there as soon as you meet requirements. I'm looking at your armory profile and there are alot of upgrades for you that can be picked up Via quests. SMV has a helm/ring/libram just to name a few upgrades via quest. If you have ANY questions please ask. :) Good luck

Thank you proudfoot, I hear you are the guy to talk to...and we will be in touch very often from here on out if that is okay with you...

yeah proudfoot is the ret dps king:P

I thought you wanted to concentrate more on pvp anyway, might as well work on the pvp gear for ret, Prot pallies arent as fun in arenas. I do have fun there but sometimes I wish I was specced different for them but I dont wanna spend the gold switching back and forth every week

Yeah, i don't know what Proud does, but he is the only lolpally i know who can truly lay the smack down. I even drop windfury for him.
